Years ago, George R.R Martin was involved in the creation of the Beauty And The Beast tv series starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman, he has not diminished in the year since.
So, I noticed that the prologue opens the book up and we have no real idea what is happen. Then Chapter 1, Bran is our narrator. That made me understand that from the beginning George had set up Bran to be the winner of the crown. I mean, its such symmetry. I think how George gets there will be better than the show as he is a capable writer, but it all made sense when I saw that. It's nice symmetry.
This sets up his world so amazingly. This is a huge world with 1,000s of characters and so many things are mentioned, like the faceless men, and other areas like Dorne that I know we meet later. He makes mention of them, but until you know more, they don't really mean anything. Knowing where this series goes and seeing how it started, I mean, this is simply so good.
This book seems to be very close to the show. The show really did pretty much lift most scenes from the book and put them on screen. They rearranged a few things and the show added more character work to fill out the show, but otherwise, I mean major dialogue is simply lifted off the page.
George has a great writing style. This is easy to read. I don't know how difficult it would be to follow without the show, but I feel it would be easy to understand how he creates this world.
I love the story going on in so many places. We have the wall, the north, the middle of the country or the neck and King's landing and then to the east and Dany.
I know how much more brutal this series gets, but when Ned was beheaded, it still sent chills down me. Ned felt like the main character and its so gutsy to kill off our main character. He had plenty of chapters from his point of view. I love that most of the Stark children get a point of view chapter. In this story, Sansa is 11 and Joffery is 12. The show, they are older, for obvious reasons, but it's prefectly understandable for Sansa to be so boy crazy and wanting pretty things. The girl ends up being 12 and seeing her father beheaded. She's simply a spoiled kid. The show its easy to forget how young Sansa is and her behavior makes more sense. She is a child trying to survive around this sociopathic family of power hungry egomaniacs. Of course she is going to agree with the Lannisters and ask her father to confess. She is the age to believe the adults around her. Of course, she would tell the queen she was about to be sent home. That is what a 12 year old would do. I was tough on Sansa in the show because she looks like she is 18 and she should have more of a backbone.
Tyrion is the best character. I just love him and Arya. Her character arc is set up so well. I mean the show did her so well. The show got this book so right.
I think this book is worth the read. Reading it made me feel like I was watching the show all over again. I want to see it again to compare the differences.
I wish Martin could finish this series. Maybe he will live another 10-15 years and actually give us an ending, but I'm not holding my breath. It should be completed and it would be a shame for his ego to prevent another author from finishing it after he dies.
I think this will be a classic in the fantasy literature up there with the Lord of the Rings

I’m definitely like it so much more than I thought I would! I needed a little break from holiday reads and this is perfect

I was completely mentally broken after these books!
