Thanks, Chrissie.

And thank you, Brian, for your interesting information about Nin.

Brian E Reynolds | -1126 comments In keeping with the NTLTRC's long-standing fairness policy, I will offer as the first suggested topic for 2024

Two French or American authors who had a passionate love affair with another author: Henry Miller and George Sand

Whatever country you consider your home, you realize that you will also always be a Cheesehead. That assignation is permanent and irremovable. So if it's Sweden that's home, then you are a Swedish Cheesehead.

True--born in Wisconsin, that is my fate.

I lived in WI too but only for 2 years (5th-6th grade). I’m not a Cheesehead but I do love cheese! I remember for school fundraisers, we sold crocks of cheese! Kinda weird but they were so good.

Why is that weird? I left both Wisconsin and the US very many years ago. And as I was saying to Brian, I don't anymore know where I belong. This results in my being interested in cultures from all parts of the world.

I would like to support John's choice:
Gunnar Gunnarsson and Halldór Laxness

Chrissie - Weird isn’t the right word. What I meant was that it’s very different from other parts of the US, where kids sell cookies, chocolate bars, popcorn, & magazines. I think you are fortunate to have lived in different countries. That’s why I like to read world lit - so I can experience other countries, which I will likely never visit.

I’m currently reading [book:The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea
by Yukio Mishima. I was looking at reading The Setting Sun by Osamu Dazai soon as well (or something else by him). I believe both these Japanese authors died too early and by their own hands It’s a bit morbid but It’s a thing. it’s a connection.

I'll keep them in mind for next year, Chad, for sure. I would like your opinions after you read them.
There are quite a few authors who committee suicide, all for different reasons, probably.
And then there are the Russian authors who got killed in duels, but we've read both of them already-Pushkin and Lermontov.

I know what you mean. I have to be in the right mood to read certain authors or genres. Sometimes I like to read lighter books.

I started on Invisible Cities by Calvino. The audio is good but I feel that alone won't do. The kindle books of Calvino are pretty expensive. But it looks like I'll have to go for it. So, then. Two books of Calvino. That'll do for my Christmas book gift to myself! :)
