I just got back into this tiny little book called How to Keep House While Drowning: A Gentle Approach to Cleaning and Organizing. It’s very affirming about not having a perfect house and includes tips and tricks to help you do the chores in a way that works for you.

Hey...can't remember if I mentioned that Ripley Hayes next book, Murder in Wood and Stone has come out. Good mystery read, although definitely start with first in the series, or even with her other series Daniel Owens Welsh Mysteries, as they are interconnected.

I love the San Amaro series. I've read them all, except the last (Book 7) because it's the last in the series. So sad to say goodbye...

I just finished A Teachable Moment, Book 7 in Ripley Hayes Daniel Owen Welsh Mysteries series. I can hardly wait for Book 8 (December 2023). This is a series that actually makes me anxious worrying over outcomes, even though I know at least our two MCs will (eventually) come out OK.
On to Murder in Shades of Wood and Stone next. I started reading Ripley Hayes with the DS Charlie Rees series and it took me awhile to make the connection, slightly inattentive as I got caught up in the stories. :)

Do you remember that I told you about Lucian Childs, who some of us know and now lives in Toronto? He was happy about a review of his debut novel Dreaming Home in an article from the «Toronto Star».Well, now he is gobsmacked, but very pleased about this article in the NYT reviewing his novel and two others:

I'm reading Cat Sebastian's new (June 2023) book, We Could Be So Good. A beautifully written story of two young men in mid-century NYC from different sides of the tracks, who meet in the newsroom (one is the boss's son and the other is from an Italian-American working class family) and experience the history of emerging gay rights firsthand. At least I think this is where this is going — I'm about midway. With a shout-out to The Charioteer. Sebastian is such a lovely storyteller.

Ordering books for the library and I just came across this cozy mystery series set on Catalina! Much Ado about Nauticaling is the first book, for anyone who's interested.

I watched Red, White, and Royal Blue on Thursday, 8PM EST. I was sooooooo excited when I found out I could watch on the 10th and not the 11th. :)If you haven't seen the movie, and loved the book, I do recommend the movie. It works well. I just get all giggly watching the book because I am just so happy! Is it perfect? There are a few things that I would change, but hey, they didn't butcher this thing and they have a happy ending! Which gay movies never seem to. It's sweet, well acted, they have some great one-liners, very tender scenes, and I am just so swooney over it. :)
The internet claims it's the #1 movie on Prime, which woohoo!!
Show the love!

This is going to sound weird but having watched the movie, I can appreciate the book more. I can these these characters as real people now. This movie is my new obsession.

I can totally imagine that. Movies can condense the plot (in a good way) while giving faces to the characters. That doesn't always work — sometimes our how we personally imagine the faces and voices of book characters doesn't align with the actors or audiobook narrators. This movie is very well cast and the two MCs are hard not to fall in love with. :)

I KNOW! So well cast. Absolutely love them. I've been restraining myself not to watch the movie back to back over and over haha. I finished reading the book (think i need to write a review?) and I can see so much of what they did carry over and what they left out. It was a good call on the writers. I take back any earlier opinions that said otherwise. 😄

Melissa, we're doing the same with old TV shows! We've been watching Lancer, Bob Newhart, Mannix, Murder She Wrote, and of course the Rockford Files.
Also we've been scouring YouTube for lost, er, gems and came across Jason King--which afforded many hours of amusement.

Watched a PBS documentary about the history of the first alphabet and how most alphabets are based on that one Egyptian alphabet. Absolutely fascinating.
I also finally watched season three of the new All Creatures Great and Small series. Someday I’m gonna read the books I bought last year. Someday. Lol.
Next up will be a Great Course on King Arthur that’s been floating around my apartment for a few years now. I’m trying to clean out my stack of unwatched DVDs, some of which were gifts from my dad so it’s good to finally get around to them.

also out: m/m mystery new ripley hayes Murder in Shades of Red. does provide trigger warning about mass shooting that is covered in first three chapters. For others genres: Martha Wells released a tiny murderbot tale. She is closing her patreon account because someone took all her short stories shared there and released them in archive sites and is apparently planning on selling ebooks on amazon.
Ben Aaronvich released a novella in the Rivers of London world, but set in America and centered around Kimberley Reynolds, the FBI agent who guest stars in many of the earlier books.
Also, thank you for mentioning Martha Wells’ new story! I found Compulsory and have now read it. Soooo good! Her second novel has been rereleased this month too. And another series of hers will rerelease next year. Plus, a new Murderbot novel in November! So much Martha Wells to enjoy!

The SO has been trying to persaude me to watch Slow Horses for years now, and last night I finally thought, why not? We watched five episodes straight, and I hated to have to stop and go to bed. :-D It's excellent. HIGHLY recommended.

It's well-acted, well-written, and very entertaining. I think the SO may have reviewed the book as well, but he really, really enjoyed it--so much so that he wanted to sit through it all over again with me.

Bahahaha!! There are threats of murder, does that count? :D
I'm currently re-watching Supernatural. That Jensen Ackles is sure nice to look at, lol.I finished watching The Vampire Diaries, the Originals, and Legacies, and I've been watching a lot of stuff on YouTube (gah, the rabbit holes I fall in!), and comedy specials on Netflix, etc. Love to laugh and these are a hoot! John Mulaney, Drew Lynch (YouTube), Russell Howard, to name a few.
I'm currently listening to Love, Hate & Clickbait, and really enjoying both the story and narration. The next audio in the queue is Mathew Quick's Inside Threat - hope it's as good as The Night Agent.
Slow Horses is on my to read pile!
I’m currently watching a lecture series about King Arthur from The Great Courses! It’s really fascinating to see how his story has changed over the centuries by which authors in which countries. I’m nearing the end and we finally got to modern work last night. I was super excited that the professor talked about Mary Stewart’s Crystal Cave series since I loved it so much. I’m disappointed that she didn’t have time to give a more complete list of modern titles she recommends.
And now I want to read A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court by Mark Twain after she discussed it in the previous lecture. 😁

I think this one is from 2022 or maybe 2023, it's recent. He talks a lot about rehab and his intervention. It was indeed a hoot! I love comedy and wish he had more available. Russell Howard is currently doing a tour and while he'll be close to where I live, I am not social enough to leave the house (me, go into the city, on purpose? No.), haha.
My social skills do improve with authors who might be in town, wink wink. :D Do you ever make it to the DC area, Josh?
I finished read 10 Things That Never Happened yesterday and really enjoyed it. I hope the audio becomes available at the library - I bet it's brilliant. It was a really fun story and yes, at times it was downright silly, but it was good, carefree fun, and I do recommend.

These are the times for good, carefree silliness. I found myself slipping into the obsessively-news-watching state again last week. Between the slab leak in the kitchen and the slab leak in the universe, it's a lot to deal with.

When i was a kid, before we moved close to DC, we would visit during Christmas and other times in the year to go to the museums and stuff. Now, I work in DC and avoid going in when I don’t have to. 🤣 Traffic is awful. There aren't really great ways to get in the city: bus, train, or car, and each has a downside. But! If you ever do make it back, i hope you have fun and plan a meet and greet or something.
