Just started Death in Castle Dark (A Dinner and a Murder Mystery #1) by Veronica Bond . I'm just not in a romance (mm or otherwise) mood right now, so I've set Tal Bauer aside for the moment.

Nor do I want anything heavy or angsty, so this book is perfect. Just old fashioned cozy with a slightly updated feel.

Unfortunately, I just can't seem to read for a than a few minutes before I'm out right now.

And in the listening department, the Office Elf played me all of Jackson Wang's new album and all of Harry Styles' new album--both of which I hugely enjoyed.

What are you guys listening to right now?

OH and also on the audio front, I heard the first part of Kale Williams' narration for The Movie-Town Murders. Such a pleasure to hear his Sam and Jason again!

My heavy reading right now is Our History Is the Future: Standing Rock Versus the Dakota Access Pipeline, and the Long Tradition of Indigenous Resistance for my other book group. I'm almost done, but man, this is not easy reading. It's also VERY important so I'm glad I read it.

My lighter reading is Free Falling, which I think I picked up at the conference in Seattle and still haven't read. I just plucked it off my shelf the other night on a whim and in need of something light before bed. It's a reminder that I haven't finished the Hell or High Water series by this author yet. The characters overlap though, so it's somewhat helpful if you've read the other books first, I think? Maybe.

I've been listening to the How to Train Your Dragon and Hobbit soundtracks while I read as a way to keep me awake and into it without the music being distracting.

Melissa | 345 comments I started Fatal Shadows in audio. Read the series many times, first time listening! So far it's going great.

I'm watching Monk, again. It's hard to find new shows, then i have to wait for each episode. It's easier just to watch an old tried and true.

We're watching Shetland 7. It's the first time we've watched it before the season was already complete. We were kind of shocked when there was no episode three last week. :) It was available last night. I guess they come out on Tuesdays. Three episodes to go and then that's the end of it all.

I read these so long ago that I'm surprised to remember as much as I do. Guilty pleasure reading — dark, lots of sex, problematic. But I loved those tattooed arms/torso book covers.

Catch a Ghost (Hell or High Water, #1) by S.E. Jakes Long Time Gone (Hell or High Water, #2) by S.E. Jakes Daylight Again (Hell or High Water, #3) by S.E. Jakes Not Fade Away (Hell or High Water, #3.5) by S.E. Jakes If I Ever (Hell or High Water #4) by S.E. Jakes Free Falling by S.E. Jakes

It turns out I never read Hell or High Water 4... so maybe I'll see how it holds up these years later.

Averin | 114 comments I am listening to Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime on my Kindle at night. Funny and sad. I crack up laugh and myself to tears as my husband watches WWE or some true crime program I don’t want to be depressed by.

In the daytime, I am listening to TJ Klune’s Under the Whispering Door on my iPhone because I have it on Libby from the library.

It's been on my "to do" list for a long time and the time has finally come. :) It's amazing, I've read this series a few times, but with each read (and now listen) I pick up new things that I either didn't notice or forgot about. It's fun! The whole series is at my library, so I am taking advantage while I can.

How to Train Your Dragon sounds like fun. I don't think I'd enjoy the Hobbit soundtrack. I used to have a cassette tape of The Wizard of Oz "soundtrack" but it had more than just the songs, it had a lot of the dialogue around the songs too. I used to listen to that over and over, especially during long car trips as a kid. With my walkman, lol.

SE Jakes is definitely a “just for fun” author for me. Lol.

Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime is really good! My book group read that one and had a great discussion about it, as I vaguely recall. Lol. It’s been a few years.

How to Train Your Dragon is pretty awesome. The music is great. The characters are great. And the ending was smart, not at all what I was expecting from an animated movie.

I always get new things from AE too! It’s a sign of excellent writing!

My favorite listen as a kid was two audio cassettes that I’d recorded from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Once, my mom wouldn’t let me watch tv, so I went to my room and put on the cassettes. I’ve seen and listened to that movie so many times, I can almost quote The Whole Thing, it seems. Lol.

Just watched Blade Runner. Wow. Well done. All I can think of is how that world, a “futuristic” LA in 2019 was very ableist though. So overwhelming with the constant bombardment of ads and flashing lights. And I noticed that because his car door went up, he had to bend down to get out. I’m becoming more attuned to these things lately.

But also, Harrison Ford looks so young in it! Like, he looks maybe in his early forties, but so much younger than what I’m used to, I guess.

Marge (margec01) | 599 comments I'm nostalgically watching the new Quantum Leap series. I was REALLY into the original, even going to the conventions, etc. The new show is actually okay. They've told two pretty good stories in the first two episodes, and there's a longer arc of why did the new guy leap before things were all ready. So far it's been staying true to the original premise, but everybody these days wants to be "dark" and "dramatic" so I'm holding back. It doesn't pay to fall in love with any TV show these days, I'm afraid.

Also want to say, the romance in. Blade Runner is terrible. Just... to me, he’s coercing her. It didn’t feel real to me. Big surprise since it’s all about the guy. Ah well.

Blade Runner is dystopian and noir. No one is innocent. Well, Rachael probably is. I've always kind of shipped Deckard and Roy and absolutely adore the tears in rain "I've seen things..." scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoAzp...

Here's an interesting Wikipedia entry about the different versions of the film. I saw it in the theater when it was released, with Ford's weird voice-over and the "happy ending." I have DVDs of the "Director's Cut" and the "Collector's Edition" with three versions.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Version...

Both Harrison Ford (b. 1942) and Rutgar Hauer (b. 1944) were in their late 30s when it was filmed. The original release date was in 1982.

Oh, that’s interesting about the different versions. I watched The Final Cut. The ending was cut as they leave the apartment, which seemed fitting.

Haldis | 1288 comments I just finished watching My Life is Murder with Lucy Lawless, whom I am now just a little bit in love with...season 1 is in Melbourne, but season 2 is in Auckland because of the lockdown, but regardless, the location plays as big a role as any of the characters. I'm really hoping that they are working on a season 3! It's such a fun quirky show.

And since I needed a new show to watch, I started Shetland last night. Saw the first two episodes and it mentioned the Shetland bus, which was responsible for getting spies and others out of Norway. I hadn't heard of this before so I'll need to do more research. My bestefar (grandpa) was part of the Norwegian underground during the German occupation. My mom doesn't really know much about it because her dad never talked about it. We only know because there was a framed commendation from the king hanging in the hall when she was growing up. Apparently he was an excellent cross country skier and posed as a trapper. That's all we really know.

OMG, i am watching the new series too. I love the original and own season 1 in dvd, but they are on one of the streaming services.

I am holding back too. They are spending a lot of time in present day, and not in the past. The original show focused on Sam and his leap, not present day issues, with a few exceptions. I hope they don't screw this up. I like how they have Al's daughter in it!!

message 73: by Marge (new)

Marge (margec01) | 599 comments Melissa wrote: "I like how they have Al's daughter in it!.."

Also, Beth, Al's wife, was the same actress who appeared in the episode M.I.A. at the end of Season 2.

Apart from wanting to tell a present day story as well as the past, they might have wanted a bigger cast this time. It takes some of the pressure off the two main actors. It also gives the audience a bit more continuity than Sam, er, Ben who is always someone else. But they need to keep things moving storywise. I have a theory as to why Ben leaped before he should have, but it could be the series finale before we find out. Which could be annoyingly dragged out.

I meant to look that up!!! Thanks for confirming. I thought it was the same actress.

I have a theory too, a few actually, but you're right, I think it will be revealed at the end of the season, which I don't know if they've been green lit to produce a full season or it could be cancelled prior. Time will tell. We'll have to compare notes after each episode. :)

Trevor Noah is so smart and so funny. I have mixed feelings about his leaving the Daily Show. I do think it's probably run its course. At the same time, of all the late night talk shows, he did the best job--his was the best and felt the most honest and intimate and insightful--of transitioning through the pandemic . He really did help us get through those first awful months. So I'm going to miss him, even though we don't check in much anymore.

Oh! What a fascinating family history.

I really enjoyed My Life is Murder. I thought Lucy and her old friend the cop had more chemistry in the first series than she has with her police liasion in the second. But the best relationship, the real relationship, is that of her and her assistant. That's so engaging.

Yes, I definitely liked Kieran from season one better, but yes, it's really her and her assistant that is the main "relationship". They are so different and so great together. Really want a third season.

Josh, le gasp! Not a fan? Sacreblue, lol. Dr. Sam Beckett was like the best hero! Some of the episodes i didn't like as much as others, but one of my all time favs is a halloween one where Al turns out not to be Al but the devil, though we're left to our own devices if it happened or just a figment of Sam's dream when he gets knocked out.

I love episodes where there are some nuggets about real life characters.

LOL.

I don't think I was watching a lot of TV back then! I went a few years without even owning a TV, believe it or not. At one point I was going full throtte for the musician thing, so I was in two different bands AND dating a musician who was in a third band. Every night was a rehearsal/practice, every weekend was a gig, and the rare night off was spent in pubs. LOL.

DISAPPEARED is back. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappe...

The original Disappeared introduced me to true crime. I had the flu and I streamed episode after episode on Amazon and was hooked by episodes like the one on Maura Murray and the McStay family.

The new incarnation is...well, it remains to be seen. Last week's episode was pretty good. The previous two seemed less in-depth and more cursory.
