Series, read about two years ago (audiobook) Set in US. In the first book, the main character is drawn to the mountain and her car stalls. The hero reluctantly admits her into the mountain community. She's a research scientist who is in danger. The bad guys are studying ex-military personnel who were very skilled at what they did (Green Berets, Navy Seals or some special ops group.) The bad guys use brain altering methods on the ex-military guys, and they are holding them in a mental institution, I think. Heroine does research at the institution, but doesn't realize that her colleagues are bad guys.

The good guys who live in the mountain have all sorts of futuristic devices -- tiny helicopters, bugs, etc. And the mountain retreat is like an eden. One of the denizens of the retreat is an actress whose face was ruined by a stalker.
