I had waited for both of you that had started and commented of the first book to finish. I have seen several threads for series where people are on different books even.

I guess I could see the slow change of him being deceived into turning against Meira, but I didn't want to believe it! Does that mean he's out as a love interest? Or can he change and come back?

Also, I really loved the climax. The complexity, the deceit and betrayals, the ultimate showdowns. It was pretty awesome.

up to Chapter 4/Page 50 : (view spoiler)[ A good start to the book, i like Meira and Marther as character, you can tell that they have a real bond. i like that their is only a small number of characters in their little group as its easier to keep tabs on who they are and what they do.
I love how meira was able to get on the mission and girl did she succed. Shows that girls are just as useful as boys in a situation like they were in. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I keep forgetting to read the synopsis before starting a new book, so I really have no idea what's going on; either that, or Snow Like Ashes has a beginning that seems more vague than other YA novels (OR I just read it too carelessly). What I'm getting so far from the first four chapters is that the main character is from some kind of Winter kingdom, and there's four lands that are each named after a season. But what I want to know is do the actual seasons have those names, or are they called something else??

I didn't get why Meira and Finn were trying to sneak into that one guy's office. I'm also confused as to why Meira just happened to grab the letter on impulse and have it end up being so important to her and her people. What a coincidence, right? (hide spoiler)]

I get why she is-- because she's some sort of pawn being used to save Winter-- but I just feel this is way too cliché. I thought I was finally getting a YA novel without kingdoms or royalty in it, but looks like I was wrong. (Not that those kinds of books aren't good, but they're way overdone, I think.) I don't see what the point of this part is yet unless it's to introduce new characters (and then kill them off, I'm guessing). At least she's not engaged to the prince anymore-- I didn't enjoy that aspect of the book at all. I'm still not enjoying this book, but I'm going to finish it since I'm 80 percent through it. (view spoiler)[That ending was a LOT better than all the other events of the book combined. I liked that Angra seemed to die, but no one knows where he went. That totally means he's coming back somehow, since there's really no other villain in the series at this point.
The plot twist totally got me; I had no idea that Meira was the Winter queen. It did make sense, since the reader doesn't know who her parents are. On the other hand, I'm also thinking "How many times has this kind of plot twist happened in YA novels?" I'm thinking a lot. (hide spoiler)]
Overall, this book just barely gets 3 stars. I plan on reading Ice Like Fire, though.
