Seth | 9 comments Spoilers ahead. This isn't one book, but a series of books from like the 80s or 90s.

A race of 6-7 foot humanoids that are what the DnD 'Barbarian' class would be if they were a separate race. The MC stops a relative of the king from assaulting a woman and flees the capital to avoid the repercussions.

Eventually he helps lead an effort to overthrow the corrupt rulers who are leading their race into ruin. Along the way, the MC becomes the first Paladin of a 'good' god/goddess whose name is similar to but isn't Tokamak. He eventually forms a chapter to his new god/goddess that is about 200 members strong, all of them from his race.

This kingdom of barbarian/monster/humanoids is not viewed favorably by their human neighbors. It has been common for them to conduct raids into human lands because they view horseflesh as a delicacy. A neighboring kingdom on a vast plateau see the internal strife in the MC's kingdom as the perfect opportunity to invade.

The MC finds out and force marches his entire chapter to a fortified pass in order to stop a war from breaking out. They convince the garrison to abandon their posts and let his order hold the pass. The invading army is surprised to see the banners of this 'good' god/goddess not Tokamak.

They send a delegation and talk to the MC. The army commander is convinced it's all just a ploy to buy time and wants to attack anyway. Some of his subordinates aren't too sure though and don't want to attack a force under not Tokamak's banners. Battle does break out though, however the narrow pass and fortified position lets the holy chapter hold off the much more numerous humans.

A human Paladin races up to the human army and confirm that chapter that they are fighting are legitimate followers of their god and ends the hostilities.

The MC later ends up going into this giant plateau kindgom. This human kingdom are highly praised for their cavalry and their best horses are this race of sentient and telepathic massive horses. The horses are the ones who decide whether to adopt a rider and who that rider is.

An evil magic user who may or may not be a necromancer attacks a small herd of these special horses. I know the magic user corrupts various creatures, but I think they did it to still living beasts. The horses at first try to fight, but quickly realize that the wounds they receive start corrupting them. They fight a delaying action and try to buy time for their young to escape to the nearest human settlement.

Not Tokamak guides the MC to a barn that usually shelters these special horses during the winter. The humans are panicked because only a small portion of the herd made if back and the ones that did are wounded and panicked. There are no nearby bonded riders who can communicate with the survivors, so the human handlers don't know what was strong enough to decimate this herd and also fast enough to catch them.

MC shows up and wants to use his Paladin powers to cure the corruption. Humans are still dubious that he really is a Paladin and don't want to let a stranger close to their revered horses. Since these horses are sentient, they know from some of the riders and other horses, that MC's race has viewed horseflesh as a delicacy. This breed of horses usually attacks MC's race on sight, so the humans decide to let him in to see the horses. They think these massive horses will quickly kill him and they're tired of him badgering them.

To their surprise, the MC isn't stomped down and eventually wins the trust of the surviving horses, He heals the horses and one of the horses ends up bonding with him and adopting the MC as a rider. Word has spread of the attack and soon several bonded riders show up to communicate with the survivors and find out what happened.

They're greeted by the first bonded rider of the MC's race and both horses and riders are confused why the MC's bonded horse would bond with the MC. They learn about these corrupted beasts that attacked the herd.

MC joins in on the hunt to find and eliminate the necromancer/evil wizard and their army corrupted beasts which now includes the rest of the herd.

Seth | 9 comments Oath of Swords

Solved, I eventually found it. It's the War God series by David Weber and the first book is the Oath of Swords. Weber usually does Sci-Fi, so I didn't even think to check his bibliography out even though I've read most of his books.
