Buddy Read - The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher - September 12, 2022

I finished this one this morning. I did enjoy it, although it was different than I was expecting. I think I'm in the 3.5 stars rounded up category. (view spoiler)[ I didn't really feel too much horror here until right at the end. I did like the ending. (hide spoiler)]

I read The Hollow Places and The Twisted Ones close together, and they are very similar protagonists, down to them having nicknames, just gotten out of relationships, and come equipped with quirky sidekicks and animal companions. Their voices sounded similar to me as well, and their situations had parallels in that helping out older family members is the reason they found themselves waist-deep in the weird.

I’ve been a bit sluggish too so you’re not alone Kas. I’m running to the ENT right now because I think I’ve had a sinus infection for over a month now. I guess I’m finally doing something about it?! 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

i finished it and loved it all over again. For me, it's staying a 5 star read. If any of y'all want to read Hollow Places, I'm up for a reread of that one too. I think if you like one, you'll like the other. Like Ian and S.K. said, they are a lot alike.

I love this one and the hollow ones, i struggled some with What Moves the Dead but i think that was my own fault, not the book. and I've read the seventh bride and must have liked it.I gave it 4 stars but don't remember much about it now.

Thanks Terry! The ENT doctor gave me a cocktail of prednisone and antibiotics so I should start getting better soon.

I finished last night. I really loved the imagery in this one. I think the ending was a bit long for me when (view spoiler)[they got to the land of the holler people.
I think if I saw it visually on screen, it would have creeped me out a bit more. It was hard to visualize in my head some of the huts, the building and all the shenanigans going on around Mouse and Roxy.
Also seeing all of those effigies on a big screen would be great and creepy! (hide spoiler)]

Super glad that I read a book by her now. I'm looking forward to reading more because I loved her atmosphere, characters and imagery in this one!

Oh yeah, Roxy is the BEST. That is all. hahaha

Yes! I completely felt the same at the end Terry. It felt more (view spoiler)[fantasy for me and didn’t scare me. I was really hoping for the ending to freak me out too because the beginning of the book really did with the deer effigy outside her windows and hanging from a tree. I didn’t know what the F was going on and loved it!

Maybe it’s the sense of unknown that does it for me and then your introduced to this weird dimension at the end that just gave me everything.
I didn’t have anymore suspense or anxiety except for them to escape.
Thank god Foxy was the smart one and brought a gun! Mouse would still be there having stone babies and Bongo would be a new doggie effigy. 😬 Hahaha (hide spoiler)]

60% in, the Green Book entries were a bit exhausting lol, but this book really makes you think of what happens when you're done & gone, someone shows up and throws all the stuff you accumulated in trash bags.. brutal!

This book gave me a really scary azz nightmare last night, I was being chased by this creature with multiple legs like a tarantula and creepy fingers shredding people to bits, holy crap.. I woke up whimpering. Uff. I love reading horror stories but starring in one, no thank you lol.

I started reading this one - I know I am two months behind from looking at when you all started this but since we have open threads around here (lol) I thought I would plop my thoughts on here as I go.

Not very far in - only 7%. But I am not reading spoilers and will read them later after I finish the book.

I love Mouse and Bongo already. I love how it is from the POV of Mouse. Some of the things she says make me giggle with delight - she would be fun to sit and talk to over a cup of coffee. :)

So adding some more thoughts on here as this book has kicked in with some creepy stuff! I am up to the 65% mark - Chapter 15. Everything is going in a spoiler just in case other members on here want to read it. :)

(view spoiler)[ The characters are cool - I love them all - Tomas, Skip, Foxy.... just awesome characters. I feel like the characters could be real people that you could just sit down and chat with.

The creepy stuff has hit the fan! Wow! The deer skull attacking the house and Mouse being scared out of her wits! But then it happening again with Foxy and crew - I would be finding an escape route maybe starting digging up floor boards and creating a tunnel under the house to get out! lol

I mean think about it - Tomas and Skip were blocking windows so the thing couldn't get in but I would be finding another exit where the damn thing couldn't follow me! lol

I teared up with Bongo ran off and Mouse was missing him - it reminded me of when I use to own dogs and they would run away especially when I was young - it is heartbreaking but I just got to chapter 15 and Bongo came back home. So the relief was felt! I wanted to hug Bongo too!

I am where Mouse got that message for "Help" along with the Kilroy drawing and she is deciding about going to check it out.

Personally bad idea - who knows what she will find in the woods and investigating something that is way out there with "things" walking/floating around is not a very bright idea. (hide spoiler)]

Planning on reading more today to see what happens next. :)
