so before Sirius went to Azkaban, harry wasn't even a year old when his parents died, right? so if Sirius was sentenced to 12 years, wouldn't he get out of Azkaban in the 3rd book? so what was the need to escape if he knew he would get out that year?

From what I just read, I think he got life in prison for his crimes, but I believe he escaped after serving 12 years.
Sirius Black somehow escaped Azkaban Prison, and from what I understand and understand, was soon to have been scheduled to receive 'The Kiss of Death'. Either that or he was just fed up with being imprisoned in Azkaban.
Sirius escaped from Azkaban because he saw in the newspaper a picture of Ron and his family in Egypt. He saw Wormtail in the picture (as Scabbers) and knew that he would be going to Hogwarts, where Harry was. So he escaped to try to save Harry.
