Joyce | 614 comments I finished The Lover and entered it for Cornucopia 3 - author no longer alive. I haven't tried to do anything with shading as that didn't go too well last time.

My next book will be Ace of Spades.

Looking for food on the cover was, so far fruitless (geddit?) One beautifully laid dinner table with no dinner, one pair of cocktails with no nibbles and one book with an actual apple but the worst Goodreads review score I've ever seen.

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments I've found an audio novella i want to read with fruit on the cover. I'll start it today
How It Ends by Rachel Howzell Hall

Kate (caitmoore) | 243 comments Hi everyone! I finished Shout yesterday and placed it in 'a YA novel'. I've started March: Book One.

Neediest prompts are as follows:
- A dystopian novel (1 option; will give us another cornucopia with acorns)
- A book featuring a ghost (3 options; will give us another cornucopia with acorns)
- A yellow majority cover (1 option; will give us another cornucopia with acorns and if we read two fitting this prompt we'll be close to completing two of those cornucopias!)
- A book set in the 1900s (1 option; combined with the above we'll have a second cornucopia)
- A book that features sports (2 options)
- A book with an item of food on the cover (1 option)

Louise | 168 comments Cool! I'll finish The wind that lays waste tomorrow :-)

I can move my book Gemini Falls to set in 1900s if we have others for set in nature....it looks like we had some options for that one.

message 56: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1338 comments I was telling my daughter last night that I was doing a read-a-thon so to let me read (13 year old putting off going to bed). She thought the idea of a read-a-thon was the funniest thing she had ever heard...she was like - so like a marathon but with books....clearly had not heard of a read-a-thon. Not a book lover like me (I blame tiktok and snapchat!)

message 57: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 557 comments We are going so well team, and now have enough acorns to complete another Cornucopia!
I have removed the colour from Cornucopia 1 on the planning page as we are ready to start a second round for that one.
It's very stormy here today so I might get a bit more reading done than I otherwise would...

message 58: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments I think for the dystopia category, I've got the only planned book. I have ordered one from the library but won't get it until Friday. 99% sure that will be fine, but I would feel safer if there was a backup plan!

I have one that I think can be described as a dystopia - some have called it that on GR - I will start it later today or tomorrow when I've finished my current read

message 61: by Ira (new)

Ira | 361 comments I am reading Gathering Blue the could fit under dystopia. I have an hour left of the audiobook.

message 62: by Louise (new)

Louise | 168 comments I counted The Wind That Lays Waste as book set in or about nature, as weather and nature plays a quite big role - and we already have 2 about family.

Sue S | 557 comments Ira wrote: "I am reading Gathering Blue the could fit under dystopia. I have an hour left of the audiobook."

oh excellent - I'll read something else then

Louise | 168 comments Uhmm would we call this yellow or brown - or orange? :-) Steinbecks spøgelse - jagten på en forfatter by Leif Davidsen

It's a travel story - the Danish title is Steinbeck's Ghost - because the author is driving in the "footsteps" of Steinbeck in his Travels with Charlie in Search of America.
He writes a lot about Steinbeck and goes to see his museum - so I guess it could also be A book featuring a ghost?

Your cover does look kind of yellowish to me, especially as I have just finished a book that includes ghosts!
The prompt is "a majority yellow cover", and I would say the cover has more yellow than any other colour. What do others think? Meanwhile, my book Kayang & Me could be coded as featuring a ghost, an author who has died, set in 1900s or family dynamics.

message 66: by Louise (new)

Louise | 168 comments 'll count it as yellow for now :-)

message 67: by Louise (new)

Louise | 168 comments And done! Now we just need to add acorns :-)

message 68: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 557 comments Okay, I have added acorns to Cornucopia 4, and added my book to complete Cornucopia 2, though we don't have enough acorns yet to fully complete that one. I have also updated the plans page to reflect what has happened on the Cornucopia pages - it's all getting confusing, but the books are being read thick and fast!

message 69: by Kate (last edited Sep 13, 2022 02:19PM) (new)

Kate (caitmoore) | 243 comments To complete more in-progress cornucopias we need the following (plus acorns!)

Cornucopia 2
- A dystopian novel (x2) -- we have 3 options for this
- A book with a majority red cover -- we have 1 option for this
- A book with a person's first name in the title -- we have 5 options for this

Cornucopia 4
- A book set in the 1900s -- we have 1 option for this
- A book with a majority yellow cover -- we have 0 options for this

Cornucopia 5
- A book that features sports (x2) -- we have 1 option for this
- A young adult novel -- we have 3 options for this

message 70: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 557 comments I have just started Bird Cloud which I need to read for AtY (I am reading in order and in the correct week) - it will work for set in the 1900s, as well as set in nature and featuring an animal.

message 71: by Joyce (last edited Sep 13, 2022 03:27PM) (new)

Joyce | 614 comments I just finished Ace of Spades which I added as a young adult book but I'm happy for it to be reassigned.

I'll think about where next in the morning when I can see straight!

Oops, it seems this book does happen mostly in the 2000s, so it will have to be nature or animals

message 73: by Erica (last edited Sep 13, 2022 06:38PM) (new)

Erica | 555 comments I finished The Sentence. I put it in for ghost.

message 74: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 557 comments I finished my audiobook Muster Dogs: The companion book to the ABC TV series and coded it as a book featuring an animal. This gave us enough acorns to allocate to complete our 3rd Cornucopia - great work team!

message 75: by Ira (new)

Ira | 361 comments I finished reading Gathering Blue for the dystopian novel.

message 76: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments I'm starting Salt to the Sea. One of my few remaining ATY books. It would fit for YA, 1900's, maybe nature (a tragedy at sea?).

message 77: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 557 comments As we are short of books about sports (which is not my usual choice), I went looking and found Able: Gold Medals, Grand Slams and Smashing Glass Ceilings which is available free on the (Australian) ABC Listen app, so that will be my accompaniment for walking/gardening/cooking for the next couple of days

message 78: by Louise (new)

Louise | 168 comments You are a champ Sue :)

message 79: by Kahlia (new)

Kahlia | 103 comments I've been struggling to get much reading time in this week, but I just finished The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy, which fits for a book with a first name in the title!

Hopefully I'll have more luck in the last few days

Kahlia | 103 comments Erica wrote: "I'm starting Salt to the Sea. One of my few remaining ATY books. It would fit for YA, 1900's, maybe nature (a tragedy at sea?)."

I think it would fit, a lot of the book is about how the characters survive the harsh climatic conditions.

message 81: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments I've settled on Lolly Willowes next as it seems to cover a lot of bases although, of course, what we mostly need are acorns.

message 82: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 557 comments Louise wrote: "You are a champ Sue :)"

Ha - well although sport is not my thing, memoirs and biographies are, and this one appealed because it's by a particularly interesting sportsman who is a very inspiring wheelchair athlete, and our current Australian of the Year!

message 83: by Lindsay (last edited Sep 14, 2022 03:51AM) (new)

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments I wasn't able to do any reading yesterday, but I'm planning on doing some today. As a team I think we're doing great as we have 3 cornucopia's fully completed. It seems like out challenge is going to be getting more acorns, so I'll try to help with that!

I've got The Age of Daredevils so I could read this as a book about sports? Are people happy this would fit? It's a story about people who were barrel jumpers on Niagara Falls. I don't think I've got any other books that feature sports.

Actually I've just realised the audio-book I'm listening to features sports. Its Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love and he talks about being the first male cheerleader at his high school. Is this ok to use as featuring sports?

message 84: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1338 comments I just finished Liam’s Town - but I think the only one it fits is name in the title - and we already have 2 of those. I've popped it in there anyway :)

message 85: by Kate (new)

Kate (caitmoore) | 243 comments We're doing so great, everyone! As others have said, our main focus at this point is acorns so reading of any and every type. Gogogo.

If anyone wants to know particular prompts in need of attention, we have:

Cornucopia 1
- A book with a majority orange cover
- A book that is 400+ pages
- A book that was published in the fall

Cornucopia 2
- A dystopian novel (x2)
- A book with a majority red cover (x2)
- A book set in or about nature

Cornucopia 3
- A book set in a school
- A book with a black and white cover
- A book by an author who is not alive anymore

Cornucopia 4
- A book set in the 1900s
- A book with a majority yellow cover

Cornucopia 5
- A book that features sports (x2)

message 86: by Joyce (last edited Sep 14, 2022 03:19PM) (new)

Joyce | 614 comments I seem to be all about Cornucopia 4. I've just finished Lolly Willowes and entered it as set in the 1900s. I quite enjoyed it. I don’t know if snark was invented by 1926 but the author had it in spades full.

Tomorrow I'll start An Artist of the Floating World An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro for its yellow cover. I'll have my one year old granddaughter all day though, so how well I do may depend on how long she wants to nap.

Night, night.

message 87: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments I randomly read The Ophelia Network which works for several options. I've put it as red cover for now since that seems the most in need.

message 88: by Kate (new)

Kate (caitmoore) | 243 comments Just ~3 days left, team. Let's get those acorns! Continuing on my listing of needy prompts, we have:

Cornucopia 1
- (3 acorns)
- A book with a majority orange cover
- A book that is 400+ pages

Cornucopia 2
- (9 acorns)
- A dystopian novel (x2)
- A book with a majority red cover

Cornucopia 3
- (3 acorns)
- A book set in a school
- A book with a black and white cover
- A book by an author who is not alive anymore

Cornucopia 4
- (3 acorns)
- A book with a majority yellow cover

Cornucopia 5
- (6 acorns)
- A book that features sports

message 89: by Sue (last edited Sep 15, 2022 02:21PM) (new)

Sue S | 557 comments I am just starting In an Antique Land, which has a black and white cover, and have almost finished Able: Gold Medals, Grand Slams and Smashing Glass Ceilings, about sports

message 90: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments The book I'm reading now would work for yellow cover or 400 pages

message 91: by Louise (last edited Sep 15, 2022 02:53PM) (new)

Louise | 168 comments I can as a minimum do
A book by an author who is not alive anymore and
A book that features sports
A book with a majority red cover
before the challenge ends :-)

Me too!

I may be able to finish Salt to the Sea over the weekend but not sure. Will keep adding in my pages anyway.

message 94: by Lindsay (last edited Sep 16, 2022 12:00AM) (new)

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments I can do:
- the majority orange cover or dystopia (The Prynne Viper
- more pages & hours towards our acorns

I'm not able to add this to the plans tab as it won't let me add a new column.

message 95: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments I should have a yellow cover finished today. It wasn’t so much the child minding that kept me away yesterday as my youngest daughter who has put in an offer on a flat after giving up on ever getting her own place since property prices went crazy in the UK. Everyone cross their fingers!

Hi Lindsay, I have added a few more columns to the Plans sheet. I had to adjust the spreadsheet a couple of days ago as I realised it wasn't counting the number of 'x's correctly, so will need to do that again when I get a moment. We have fully completed 4 Cornucopias now, and just need acorns to complete 2 more!

Oh, definitely fingers crossed Joyce - I know the feeling! I think property prices have gone crazy everywhere. My son in Canada recently managed to buy a house with his fiance, but my son here in Perth has had an awful time - he and his partner are renters - both artists who work from home and have a baby, and they were very lucky to find an affordable rental at the last minute before having to move back in with me! Luckily my far more astute daughter got into the property market years ago and is now sitting pretty.

Good luck to your daughter! The real estate market at the moment seems crazy.

We have 1-2 days left (depending on time zones!) and are doing great. As usual acorns are the main thing we need to acquire, so if anyone has some short books they'd like to hurry through now would be a good time, haha.

Cornucopia 1
- 3 acorns
- a book with a majority orange cover
- a book that is 400+ pages

Cornucopia 2
- 6 acorns
- a dystopian novel
- a book with a majority red cover

Cornucopia 3
- 3 acorns
- a book set in a school
- a book with a black and white cover
- a book by an author who is not alive anymore

Cornucopia 4
- 3 acorns
- a book with a majority yellow cover

Cornucopia 5
- 6 acorns

Joyce | 614 comments I finished An Artist of the Floating World and will update later. Today is likely to be a dead loss as the same daughter has her birthday and the day will go on cooking and feasting. I’ll aim to make up for it tomorrow though with as many quick-read pages as I can.

message 100: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1338 comments I finished another book but looks like we really need acorns not books.
