Team Apple, it's time to fill those cornucopias with our autumn harvest!

You will work to fill each cornucopia using the prompts provided. You can read to fill them in any order you'd like, and you can refill the same ones multiple times.

Each book read may only be used for one prompt per team challenge. Don't forget about your acorns! You get some for every 1000 pages read (or 15 hours of audio listed to).

ACORNS

- Earn an acorn for every 1000 pages read as a team.
- Earn an acorn for every 15 hours of audio listened to.

Note: Acorns must be accrued to fill the cornucopias. Once you complete a cornucopia, those acorns should not be used on future cornucopias.

CORNUCOPIA #1

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book with a majority orange cover
- A book that is 400+ pages
- A book featuring an animal in the story
- A book that was published in the fall (September, October, or November)

CORNUCOPIA #2

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A dystopian novel
- A book with a majority red cover
- A book with a person's first name in the title
- A book set in or about nature (forest, camping, environmental literature, etc.)

CORNUCOPIA #3

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book set in a school
- A book featuring a ghost
- A book with a black and white cover
- A book by an author who is not alive anymore

CORNUCOPIA #4

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book set in the 1900s
- A book about family dynamics
- A book with a majority yellow cover
- A magical realism novel

CORNUCOPIA #5

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A mystery or thriller
- A book that features sports
- A book with an item of food on the cover
- A young adult novel

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments Hi Guys, this is the first time I've taken part in a readathon, so I'll probably have lots of questions.

I guess I'll list the books I'm planning to read and where they fit so we can try to get some Cornucopia's filled. Please let me know if this is the right thing to do!

#1 A book featuring an animal in the story The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman
#1 A book that was published in the fall (September, October, or November) - The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson
#3 A book by an author who is not alive anymore - Death of an Outsider by M C Beaton
#4 A magical realism novel In Five Years by Rebecca Searle

Louise | 168 comments I am adding my suitable current reads to the spreadsheet :-)

message 4: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments Thanks Louise I’ve added the books I’m hoping to read under the plans tab.

message 5: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments Hi Team,

The book I'm currently reading - Wahala - won't be finished before the Readathon starts and it fits...precisely nothing! I will finish it though and count it for acorns.

I've added the next two books I have planned to the spreadsheet - To Sir, With Love and The Lover. I've added them each in a separate column. That way I can log all their attributes which lets the group see how many books we might have for each option and jiggle them around to make them fulfill the prompts needed for a cornucopia.

I hope that makes sense.

Kate (caitmoore) | 243 comments Hi everyone! I'm very excited to be reading with you all.

message 7: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 557 comments Good morning Team Apple! This is the first time I've actually remembered to leave the last part of a book so that I can finish it during the Readathon, so I'm reading two at the moment and will also start an audiobook today. Wishing you all a great reading week!

message 8: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1338 comments Hi team Apple. I'm excited to be here. It's 10.15am here in Adelaide but I haven't done much reading yet today.....I look forward to reading and chatting with you all.

message 9: by Bec (last edited Sep 09, 2022 05:50PM) (new)

Bec | 1338 comments Okay I'm currently reading an ARC for a book which is due to be published 26 Sept....do you think I can count that as a book published in fall (which is really spring here :P) as it will be published in September?

And set in 1900s, is that anything in 1900s - so 1930 would count?

message 10: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments Hi Team! It's Saturday morning here in China, so I'll get started reading... but I'm just at the end of a book and don't have 100 pages left so I'll just count the pages to add, and meanwhile think about what to read next.

message 11: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11197 comments Mod
lolol Bec, sorry, yes a book publishing later this September would count, as that was my intention (though this group definitely has the most "it's actually spring here" members!)

message 12: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments Hi, I'm joining team Apple! I'll fill in all my details and plans later today.

Awesome thanks!
That said, it doesn't feel like spring.....so rainy at the moment.

A..."

Here in Perth it's a beautiful spring day so I'll be spending the morning working in the garden listening to an audiobook, and also to the very cute tiny striated pardelotes singing loudly while building a nest under my hanging basket!

message 15: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments Just realised I have 94 pages left of my current read! Oops

message 16: by Kate (new)

Kate (caitmoore) | 243 comments Hi Meg! Hi everyone! I've almost finished my first book (100 pages left exactly, which worked well), then on to the second. We already have a good spread of prompts covered by various listed planned books.

If anyone is looking for prompt inspiration the most needy ones are A dystopian novel, A mystery or thriller, and A book with an item of food on the cover.

message 17: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments I can definitely do mystery and dystopia. Both are genres i enjoy. I'll have a look for food too

message 18: by Kahlia (new)

Kahlia | 103 comments Yay Team Apple! I started two new books this morning before I had a chance to check in here, so time to go and see how they fit in!

message 19: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments I finished a book but only had 52 pages left so I added it to the page count. Starting The Sentence now and continuing to read Vernon God Little (already started but more than 100 pages left).

message 20: by Ira (new)

Ira | 361 comments Hi. Good morning from Norway. I have 120 pages left of On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous. I think it could cover a book a bbout family dynamics.

message 21: by Louise (new)

Louise | 168 comments Goodmorning team - hmm I am reading this Black Forest but it only has 80 pages! Should I *not* count it as a challenge book, but only pages?

message 22: by Kate (new)

Kate (caitmoore) | 243 comments Good morning everyone! Yesterday I completed Piranesi and placed it under 'a magical realism novel'. We have at least one option for everything except a book with an item of food on the cover.

Unfortunately Louise, as it had less than 100 pages it doesn't count to fulfil the prompts. Certainly add the pages, though! Those acorns are important.

message 23: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments We've already got an acorn - go team apple!

message 24: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 557 comments A great first day team Apple!
I have just finished reading Gould's Book Of Fish A Novel In Twelve Fish and have coded it as a book that is 400+ pages. I have also colour-filled the prompts on the plans page if they have already been filled, so it's easier to see which we still need. Happy Sunday everyone!

message 25: by Kate (new)

Kate (caitmoore) | 243 comments Good idea with the colour coding, Sue!

message 26: by Louise (new)

Louise | 168 comments Great idea :-)

message 27: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1338 comments Morning all. I'm checking in to add my pages from yesterday....but found myself scrolling Goodreads rather than reading.....need to get on the laptop and into my book :P

message 28: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments Hi Sue and Caitlin, I've just added my reading for Saturday.

I also finished The Complete Maus so I've added this to the completed tab, as #4 a book for 1900's (as we already had one for #1 a book featuring an animal in the story). I've also highlighted this in green on Cornucopia #4 and on the plans tab. I hope this is what I'm supposed to do but if it's not correct please let me know as this is the first readathon I've taken part in!

Great job Lindsey! You have done everything right except deleting that column from the Plans page, which I have just done for you. By the end of the week the plans page gets extremely long if we don't remove the completed books, which are moved to the Completed page. Did you enjoy Maus? I read it a few years ago when a student I was working with had to read it for school - he had no understanding of the background and just read it as a story about animals! I found it quite fascinating

message 30: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments I forgot to count the book I’m reading to my son, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Had more than 100 pages left before the challenge started and we’ll finish it today I think! I’ll add it to the spreadsheet later.

message 31: by Ira (new)

Ira | 361 comments Hi team. I finished reading On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (120 pages). Due to some problems with my internet connection the team spreadsheet won't load correctly. I will try again in an hour or two to see I the problem is solved.

message 32: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments Thanks Sue. Ah that makes sense about deleting the ones that are completed.

I learned about WWII at school and I’ve visited the Holocaust museum so I knew a lot of what happened during the persecution of the Jews in Europe. But it made it a much realer experience to read this book about someone’s actual experience of the suffering and horrors they lived through. I’d highly recommend this graphic novel to anyone who wants to learn more about WWII. Be aware this is an upsetting read.

I’ve heard lots of people recommending it recently, so this is why I picked it up. I’m glad I did. It’s going to be one of my top books of the year.

message 33: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 557 comments In my very large physical TBR I found a very short novella (105 pages) The Death of Napoleon which I whipped through this afternoon, and have coded as a book with a majority orange cover. The only other prompt it fits is an author who is no longer alive, but I can switch those if someone else gets stuck.

message 34: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments I finished Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban with my son today and counted it for book set in a school.

message 35: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments I've finished Wahala and noticed that quite a few people have tagged it as thriller or mystery. I thought it was more silly than thrilling but do we think I can enter it as a thriller?

I'll definitely finish To Sir, With Love today.

message 36: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 557 comments Joyce wrote: "I've finished Wahala and noticed that quite a few people have tagged it as thriller or mystery. I thought it was more silly than thrilling but do we think I can enter it as a thrill..."

Wahala is coded as a thriller on the main GR page so I say go for it!

message 37: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments Is there anywhere else that We Had to Remove This Post would fit Louise? I have absolutely nothing else for Wahala. It doesn't matter if not, we'll just get to our second Cornucopia 5 all the quicker!

message 38: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments I’ve finished To Sir, With Love To Sir, With Love by E.R. Braithwaite and entered it for a red cover as we only had one of those listed.

message 39: by Lindsay (last edited Sep 11, 2022 01:01PM) (new)

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments That's us nearly got our first Cornucopia - We just need to get more acorns. I don't know if acorns need to be 1000 pages OR 15 hours of audio, or if they can be a combination of both. If it's a combination of both then I think we've got our first one done.

Sue/Caitlin - do you guys know how this works?

Also can we complete each Cornucopia more than once?

message 40: by Kate (new)

Kate (caitmoore) | 243 comments Awesome work everyone! Yes, Lindsay, the acorns are a total combination of audio AND pages, and we have three now. I could put them into our first Cornucopia to finish it off?

We can complete Cornucopias as many times as we like :).

I'll check - hmm
would :A book with a black and white cover be ok - or are no other colours allowed?

Bec | 1338 comments Louise wrote: "I'll check - hmm

Hmm, to me that doesn't look black and white.....

I've just finished Gemini Falls.
Not sure I can put it anywhere as it really only fit book published in Fall or book set in the 1900s, both of which are already taken.....
although that said - it is set in a small town and the main characters are on a farm and the town's waterfall plays a big part of the story....does anyone think this could count towards set in or about nature?

Yes I would say Gemini Falls is set in or about nature, especially as Falls is in the title!

We still have a whole week to go so it is no problem to move to the second set of Cornucopias for the most popular prompts.

message 44: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments Looks like we've got 3 acorns and our first cornucopia!

Louise - random question - was We Had to Remove This Post set in the Netherlands? I need a book set there for another challenge.

message 45: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1338 comments Sue wrote: "Yes I would say Gemini Falls is set in or about nature, especially as Falls is in the title!."

Awesome. I'll pop it in there for now.

message 46: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 557 comments I have just finished the audiobook The Boys: A Memoir of Hollywood and Family by Ron Howard and his brother Clint, and a very interesting one it was too. I have coded it as a book with a black and white cover.

I wasn't sure so I just had a quick look at some of the other spreadsheets. Yes, I just put 3 into the acorn box of Cornucopia 1, and it automatically updated the acorn tracking page. I am in awe of people who can design these complicated spreadsheets!

Hi! There was some confusion in my group about how to complete the cornucopias, so I've updated the first message in your thread to make it a bit clearer. Just wanted to let you know -- the prompts and requirements have not changed, just formatted them to be clearer on the requirements.

Just a reminder that I'm not actively checking all of the threads, so if you have any questions about the way the challenge works, feel free to post in the FAQ thread and I'll get back to you!
