Fall 22 Readathon: Team Challenge Intro & FAQs

It's time for our next Read-a-Thon, and we are bringing the autumn harvest with our Team Challenge.

Each team will be filling cornucopias with fall goodies. You will work to fill each one using the prompts provided. You can read to fill them in any order you'd like, and you can refill the same ones multiple times.

Each book read may only be used for one prompt per team challenge. Don't forget about your acorns! You get some for every 1000 pages read (or 15 hours of audio listed to).

ACORNS

- Earn an acorn for every 1000 pages read as a team.
- Earn an acorn for every 15 hours of audio listened to.

Note: Acorns must be accrued to fill the cornucopias. Once you complete a cornucopia, those acorns should not be used on future cornucopias.

CORNUCOPIA #1

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book with a majority orange cover
- A book that is 400+ pages
- A book featuring an animal in the story
- A book that was published in the fall (September, October, or November)

CORNUCOPIA #2

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A dystopian novel
- A book with a majority red cover
- A book with a person's first name in the title
- A book set in or about nature (forest, camping, environmental literature, etc.)

CORNUCOPIA #3

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book set in a school
- A book featuring a ghost
- A book with a black and white cover
- A book by an author who is not alive anymore

CORNUCOPIA #4

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book set in the 1900s
- A book about family dynamics
- A book with a majority yellow cover
- A magical realism novel

CORNUCOPIA #5

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A mystery or thriller
- A book that features sports
- A book with an item of food on the cover
- A young adult novel

Emily, I realize these were just posted, but should the team member names be on the spreadsheets? Are the leaders supposed to be adding the names? As a co-leader for Cranberry, I am not sure how to do it.

You can add the team member's names, or you can just let them add their names as they post page counts. Totally up to you! (When I'm captain, I usually go and add each person's names so that I can see if anyone hasn't added page counts)

I suspect I posted this question in the wrong thread, so I'll repost here.

One of the prompts (both individual and team) is a book of more than 400pg. I'm currently reading (The Devil and the Dark Water, 576pg), but if I have less than 400pg, but more than 100pg left to read by the time the RAT actually starts, could it be used for that prompt? Or would that be stretching things, given that I might not have read 400pg during the actual RAT?

Failing that, would being set on a sailing ship count for "in or about nature"

Trish, for the team challenge, I'm fine with you using the book if you have at least 100 pages remaining. Team challenge is low stakes.

You may want to post that question in the Individual Challenge for Jackie to answer, as we are a bit more stringent on requirements for the Individual Challenge and she is handling the verification of those requirements.

For those who are interested, my answer for the individual challenge is the same: if you read at least 100 pages during the readathon you are good.

I have 2 questions, sorry if they've been answered elsewhere and I didn't find them!
1. What is the audio equivalent of 100 pages left?
2. Say you have read 200 pages of a 300 page book pre sept 10, do the full 300 count to an acorn or only the 100 you read during the official time?

Meg, it's 100 minutes (so an hour and 40 minutes remaining).. we generally do a 1 minute=1 page ratio to keep things easy on us. The acorns count only pages you've read since the start of the read-a-thon!

Query about the "set in the 1900s" prompt - to me, 1900s means the decade 1900-1909, the same way "set in the 1960s" would mean 1960-1969.
But I've noticed other people on the planning sheet for our group have interpreted it as 20th Century, i.e. 1900-1999. Could I just check which interpretation the mods meant?

Uhm does the 100 pages rule apply here? I am reading a 80 page book - so just want to know if I can count it for a full category

An 80 page book would just count towards your teams acorns but not a prompt for either the team or individual challenge.

Yes that is correct! Any pages read or minutes listened can be used toward acorns, but only books that meet the page requirements can be used towards a challenge prompt.

How should I mark daily pages read if I’m reading an ebook?

I figured I could look at the percentage read and multiply by the total pages listed on goodreads but I don’t know how okay that is.

So, when all the prompts are completed for a cornucopia, and they'e just awaiting acorns, can we start filling prompts for the next cornucopia along - e.g. if all the prompts are done for Cornucopia 2, but we haven't got the acorns yet, can we still start filling in the next sent of prompts for Cornucopia 2? Or have we got to wait until the first column is completed, with its acorns?

Yes! You can start working on using the prompts a second time, even if you haven't finished all the prompts for the first go round.

Yes, but they must be at least 200 pages to count as a completed book (for the prompts). You can use graphic novels with less than that for acorn page count though.
