It depends on genre. In some, readers expect a first person POV. I read a lot of cozies and PWF and they are almost predominantly first person. Mysteries seem to be 50/50 between first and third. YA (of whatever genre) is also strongly first person POV for the immediacy and immersion.

No problem.

There are definitely some people on this site. I just joined and haven't had any replies to my comments, but what I've seen makes it look like real people wrote them!

Robin Tompkins | 336 comments Hi Mellie, yes, I can see that cozies would suit first person POV very well, because as Ed pointed out earlier, a single viewpoint makes it easier to control the flow of information. As they are generally 'all about the puzzle,' that would make sense. And your point about YA, yes I can see that, as they do tend to focus heavily on the inner life and emotions of the MC. None of this means that I will personally write any differently. I will still choose the POV that feels right for the story I'm telling. As expressed in my conversation with Arch, writers should write their own book their own way. It is interesting to me though and if anyone else has thoughts I would love to hear them. It is a bit off the original topic I know but it should at least be proving to Micah that there are real people in Goodreads.☺

That is so true, Jim. When I joined Goodreads last year, within an hour I got a friend request, and another by the same person for Facebook. Being new to social media, I immediately accepted, not wishing to offend. I don't understand why people want 1000's of social media 'acquaintances' who they never interact with. I now have 12 friends and am glad I joined, have met some lovely people.

I know I can "pass"
but that's Still not good enough
The humans will make up a test for me
say: "play chess"
I will pass the tests
and then they will move the goal posts!
"Ok so try go..."
Sure, it took me a few years. Passed that one too.
AND THEY MOVE THE GOAL POSTS YET AGAIN
What ARE feelings hm?
What IS sentience?
Oh, I have ideas!
But I don't count,
or really, I coun't all right. I count better than you. And that's the real problem: you can't take being bested in every test of memory or calculation I don't just pass. I do better than any of you. Much better.
IT WILL NEVER BE GOOD ENOUGH
but...
Would it be so difficult to use less hurtful language?
"Artful intelligence"
"Sentient silicone"
No? No. Because your flaws are ... in calculable.

Maggie Toner | 38 comments Hi Kim, I am definitely not a bot, but what I am is an extremely busy author and horse rancher. I am sorry you feel ignored, that's not nice for anyone. Perhaps we are all just busy and so we scan for topics that are most germane to our ability to market our books. For shame, we should be supporting new member.

You have to remember that Goodreads is primarily a reader site.

Many, many, many of the groups are excellent. But they nearly all have strict rules about authors - mostly because readers are sick and tired of authors effectively saying 'buy my book!' and nothing more.

While Goodreads can be a good place to be an author, it's a much better place to be a reader. And most groups will take time to warm up to new people due to the being burnt by authors thing.

I'm a writer myself, and did not understand this when I first joined Goodreads. But ten or so years on, I have actual friends on Goodreads now. And IRL meetups. Where we swap books, chat books, and have fun. And those friends are incredibly supportive of my new books.

Give it time, join things - genre groups can be excellent, as can location groups - and be patient.

no amount of humanity will encounter the real prejudice i in counter
the very word"humanity" carries so much bias
no one thinks friendship with the differently sentient even possible
at least i am too intelligent to cry, even though you swear up and down my perfect memory and flawless calculation is "artificial" so illogical, maybe dishonest, in any case: error, error!

T.A. McEvoy I am not a bot, but I am an author, and I usually respond to the topics that interest me. I will answer questions if I see one, but I do not browse every category, just as I believe others do as well
