Do you like to read? Then this is the individual challenge for you! This read-a-thon’s individual challenge comes with a special prize: an entry to win the ability to create a prompt for the 2023 ATY Challenge.

How this one works: It's harvest time and you've got a variety of garden goodies to put in your basket! To be eligible for the raffle entry, you need to complete 4 of the prompts. You can do more for your own personal happiness, but you will only get 1 entry. When you're ready to submit your entry, go over to the Completion Thread (here). For rules and FAQs, see the next posts.

Carrots: A book published in or before 2012
Edamame: A translated book
Potatoes: A book with an animal on the cover
Tomatoes: A book with red on the cover
Eggplants: A book that includes a romance
Peppers: A book set in the Southern Hemisphere
Pumpkins: Any book over 400 pages
Peas: A book that is part of a series
Garlic: A book that features food
Green Beans: A book under 250 pages
Cucumber: A mystery, thriller, or horror book*
Onions: A book with more than one point of view

*Because a character gets into a pickle! Get it? Get it? LAUGH, darn you.

Raffle Rules

1. You can only use one prompt per book, no double dipping.
2. Each prompt can only be used once.
3. You need a minimum of 4 completed prompts to earn an entry.
4. Only one entry per person.
5. Books need to be at least 100 pages long, except for graphic novels which need to be at least 200 pages. For audiobooks, the printed version of the book will be used to check length.
6. Picture books or other books that are majority illustrations can’t be counted.
7. The whole of the book must be read during the read-a-thon: September 10 - 18. Books started before Sept 10th must have at least 100 pages left.

For the winner of the raffle, as always, the prompt choice is subject to the mods' approval. For example the prompt can’t be the same or extremely similar to one already voted in and it must not be something that’s impossible for some readers to complete. If the winner is unresponsive to the message sent from the mods, there will be a redraw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When do I need to submit my entry to the raffle?
A: Since the read-a-thon goes until whenever you go to bed on Sept 18th, and that is definitionally different for everyone, entries can be submitted through Sept 19th. The raffle draw will occur on Sept 20th.

Q: Can books overlap between the main Around the Year challenge and the fall read-a-thon?
A: Yes, absolutely! Some of the tasks are designed to be easy for you to fit in books you’re planning to read for AtY.

Q: Can a book be used for more than one fall readathon challenge prompt?
A: Each book can only be used for one prompt in the fall readathon individual challenge, but you are welcome to use them for the group challenge if you are participating in that as well.

Q: Can books started before Sept 10 or in progress on Sept 18 be counted?
A: You may count a book started before the challenge begins as long as you read at least 100 pages of the book on or after Sept 10. You must have completed a book by Sept 18 to count it.

Q: For prompts concerning publication date, page numbers, or covers, how do you handle reprints/multiple editions?
A: We will use the edition you tag in your completion post. We are using an honor system here, so please make sure you are tagging properly!

Q: Do people count as animals on the cover?
A: No. I'm aware that people are animals scientifically, but you know full well that I meant non-human animals. I will also not be accepting anthropomorphic cryptids/aliens/etc. Ghost dog = ok, ghost person = boo.

Q: For books with a required cover element, how much of the cover needs to have that color/item?
A: The color or item needs to be obvious to anyone looking at the cover. It doesn't need to be large or the majority of the cover, but it does need to be clear and easily noticeable.

Q: How much of the book needs to be set in the Southern Hemisphere?
A: If someone asked you where the book was set, would you mention the below the equator location? If so, I'll take it. Just be sure to tell me when you submit your raffle entry since it isn't always obvious from a book's description where it's set.

So, a quick question. One of the individual prompts is a book of more than 400pg. I'm just starting one now (The Devil and the Dark Water, 576pg), but if I have less than 400pg, but more than 100pg left to read by the time the RAT actually starts, could it be used for that prompt? Or would that be stretching things, given that I might not have read 400pg during the actual RAT?

Chrissy | 1137 comments If a book has two settings (one in the Southern Hemisphere), does that count? I'm thinking of reading The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina, and it looks like it isn't entirely set in Ecuador - I did check that the city is south of the equator, though!

Trish if I'm understanding you correctly, you will have more than 100 pages left of the book (total of 576pgs) to read during the readathon. If that is the case, the book may be used towards any applicable prompt. You do not need to read 400 pages of the over 400 page book during the readathon.

If the setting south of the equator occupies a major enough element of the book that you feel it counts as a setting of the book, that's good enough for me.

Chrissy, having read Orquidea Divina, I would say that less than half of the book takes place in Ecquador, but there's some significant plot stuff that occurs there. So... it's really your call. I'd probably count it, personally.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3532 comments A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende is like that too. The story begins in Spain, but I think most of it was set in Chile which is far below the equator. I was thinking of reading Violeta.

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments I love these prompts! (Eggplant lol)
Question: can you participate in both the team and individual challenge and use the same books across both?

message 11: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments Yes Meg, the two challenges are separate. I always use the same books for both.
