SOLVED. Zombie novel from the '90s that starts with a zombie at the bottom of a lake

Several years ago I came across a book about a living dead apocalypse that seemed to involve zombies quite different that your classic "George A.Romero" style creatures. They weren't cannibalistic or violent towards humans, and the focus was on why they had risen. The opeining chapter focused on the main characer's father dying, comming back to life and then walking into a lake on his property. The main character leaves for a time, returns to the lake and sees his father continuing to walk aimlessly at the bottom.
