"I have music last," Rya said. "I don't really play an instrument though..." She shrugged. "I'm sure I'll like it anyways."

"It's okay. I don't have much experience with instruments either. But, I have had piano lessons before. I don't think I'm very good at it, though" Ruby said with a small laugh.
Rya let out a laugh. "One time, I tried to sing... It did NOT end well. Trust me. I'm sure you're great at piano though."
Ruby smiled. "Thanks! What do you mean that it didn't end well?" she asked. She took another sip from her water bottle. For some reason, the water tasted even more refreshing than before.
"My sister actually covered her ears," she said, grinning. "I'm just that bad at singing." Rya shrugged.
"That's okay! Not everyone is good at singing, and no one is good at everything" Ruby said. "So, what do you usually do after school?" she asked out of curiosity.
"I usually finish up my homework and go swimming," she said with a smile. No one had ever really backed up her talent with singing. Then again, Ruby had never heard her sing.
"That sounds fun! Well, except for the homework part. I just usually walk around campus and listen to music" Ruby said. She was curious about what Rya's singing was like, but she didn't want to make her feel bad.
"Maybe we could meet up after school to go swimming or something?" Rya suggested. It felt weird being away from water for so long. Her hair foamed a bit, showing how excited she was.
"Sure, that would be fun!" Ruby said. She finished her apple, which was delicious. "This is probably the best apple I've ever had! Speaking of food, what's your favorite food?" she asked.
"Oh! I know!" Rya said excitedly. "I tried this human food on my way here. Pizza! It was so good." She grinned. "I heard they have Pizza Day here. I can't wait."
"Oh, yeah! Pizza is delicious! My favorite food though is macaroni and cheese. Have you tried it before? It's so good! You should try it if you haven't!" Ruby said enthusiastically.
"No, what is that?" Rya said curiously, tilting her head to the side. Typically, she didn't like cheese, but she would make an exception for this.
"It's basically noodles covered in cheese.
I can get both of us some for you try!" Ruby said. She stood up, walking towards the lunch line, grabbing to small cups of macaroni and cheese for both of them. She sat back, handing one Rya. "Go on, try it!"
I can get both of us some for you try!" Ruby said. She stood up, walking towards the lunch line, grabbing to small cups of macaroni and cheese for both of them. She sat back, handing one Rya. "Go on, try it!"
She raised an eyebrow but still cautiously spooned some into her mouth. As soon as she got a taste, her eyes widened to twice their regular size. "Omigosh, what's IN this?" she said.
"Well, I think they put in some flour and a few spices, along with the noodles and cheese. What do you think?" Ruby said. She raised an eyebrow, wondering if Rya meant that in a good way or not.
"It's absolutely amazing!" Rya squealed, turning a few heads. "I think it's my new favorite food! It's even better than pizza... Thanks!"
"You're welcome! I'm glad you like it!" Ruby said, taking bites from her own macaroni and cheese. "Delicious as always!" she said with a smile.
She smiled at her. "So, what powers do you have?" Rya asked. Ruby seemed like a really nice girl. Maybe her first friend?
Ruby smiled. "I can shapeshift, create and control fire, and heal. What about you? What are your powers?" she asked.
"Uh, I can control water and heal wounds, but I'm not very good at it. The healing, I mean. The water I'm quite good at," she said with a smile. The fire thing was a cool power.
"Oh, that's cool! And don't worry, I'm sure you'll get better with your healing power with more practice" Ruby said. She finished the rest of her sandwich. She didn't really eat much before lunch, so she was glad to have time to eat a proper meal now.
"Yeah, I guess. I don't really practice it often. And I'm guessing shapeshifting means you can transform into a phoenix?" Rya guessed.
Ruby nodded. "Yeah! Funny story: that's how I found out I was a phoenix. I got into an argument with my stepmom, and I was so angry with her that I transformed into a phoenix. It freaked both of us out, and my parents pretty much confirmed that I'm a phoenix like them" she said.
"Wow, that must've been..." Rya tried to think of a word that would describe what Ruby told her. "I really don't know," she said with a small laugh.
"I can't really explain it, either. But shortly after that happened, I did research and came across the school. My parents agreed to send me here after I told them about it" Ruby said.
"Oh, I was sent here because of humans," she said. "They were over polluting our river so I was sent here to stay safe, I guess. The oil spills were killing a lot of naiads."
"Oh, I'm sorry about that. Humans can be horrible sometimes. I can't believe they would do that!" Ruby said.
"It was happening all over anyways," Rya said shrugging. "I'm sure my parents and siblings will evacuate. Obviously." Then she turned to Ruby and smiled cheerfully.
"Well, at least your safe. That's what counts, right?" Ruby said, smiling back at Rya. "Have you ever left your home before coming here? Or is this your first time away from home?" she asked.
She flicked a strand of watery hair away from her face and responded, "Yeah, I've never been out of the water except for that one time when we visited another river and had to get out of the water for a few minutes."
"That's cool. Is it weird not being in the water? Or are you used to it now? And what's it like living in the water?" Ruby asked.
"Yeah, I got used to it, I guess." She shrugged. "And living underwater is so much easier than on land. Easier to get where you want to faster cause you can float."
"Yeah, that does sound easier. You've seen a a lot of sea creatures, right? What's your favorite one?" Ruby asked. She was fascinated. She wanted to learn more about life underwater.
"Easy! Dolphins. They're so cute and sometimes if you bribe them they'll let you ride them," Rya said, grinning. "I do like seals too, though."
"I love dolphins too! Yeah, I've seen people feed dolphins and let them ride them because they gave them food" Ruby said, smiling. "I've always wanted to ride a dolphin. It looks so much fun!"
"I'm sure if there's a nearby river or something I can convince the river dolphins to give you a ride," Rya offered, grinning back. "It's the best."
"That would be great!' Ruby said. "I wonder if there are dolphins near the school? It would amazing to see one in person!"
"Maybe? But I know a way to call them," she said. She couldn't believe that the things she had known all her life were alien to others.
"Really? How?' Ruby asked. She was excited that she could finally see a dolphin in person instead of in videos she had seen before.
"It sounds like this," Rya said, making a few clicks. "It's just calling them." She smiled at Ruby's eagerness.
"Oh, I didn't know that! That's so cool!" Ruby said. She tried copying Rya by making the clicking sounds. "Like that?"
"Yeah, kinda!" Rya said with a grin. No one really cared about her time under the water except Ruby.
"Your life underwater sounds fun! I wonder what it would be like to live in the water" Ruby said.
"It's amazing. I still kinda wish I could live down there, but..." she shrugged. "Whatever."
"Do you talk your parents still? Ruby asked. She didn't want to intrude in Rya's personal life, but she was still curious.
"Sometimes I manage to send them a message with a gull if they can risk coming up to the surface. They don't always receive it, though," she said.
"I still talk to my parents once in awhile, if I'm not too busy" Ruby said. She gave a puzzled expression. "What do you mean they don't receive them sometimes?
"Oh, if it's too dangerous to come to the surface then they can't receive the message, " she said. "But I'm glad you can contact your parents."
Ruby nodded. "Yeah, that makes sense. Me too. Some students probably don't really talk to their parents anymore, so I'm glad I'm still able to" she said.
