SOLVED. Adult Fantasy. Lawyer inherits fantasy world - kind of. [s]

Hi! I'm looking for this book I read around 2005 - 2006, from what I remember it's about this guy (who has a desk job or maybe works as a lawyer) and he has this contract or letter that he has a claim to this fantasy island. I think he goes over there (and returns again at some point) and sort of figures out the politics of the fantasy world and maybe wants to become a king or whatever?

That's about all the details I have, it might have been a series of books or a trilogy (it's not the inheritance trilogy, that was written later and I'm fairly sure I read it in 2006).
