My Buddy didn't show up, but I'll post my thoughts anyway in this Defy Me Buddy Read:

I don't know why Book #4 & #5 don't have Chapter #s anymore. Tough to discuss and plan for a Buddy Read, since I am reading a deadtree book, I'll use page numbers.

p. 1-70:
I liked the flashbacks of encounters between young Ella and young Aaron. (view spoiler)[So sad when young Warner thinks his father is killing his mother. I don't put it past Anderson, but I don't remember how Warner's mother died. (hide spoiler)]

Ella & Emmaline: Wow, I never saw all this coming. Wasn't this originally a trilogy? I wonder if Ms. Mafi always intended for this story to end up here. (view spoiler)[Supreme Commanders of Oceania donated their two daughters for experiments. Sick.

How were the memories of all the children of the Supreme Commanders erased or suppressed? Drugs? Does someone have that ability? (hide spoiler)]

Nazeera: (view spoiler)[I wasn't sure that she could be trusted. I thought Kenji's crush was going to be unrequited and sad. But hey, there's some heat between Nazeera and Kenji. Whooee, go Kenji! I LOVE the conversation where Kenji can't look at Nazeera because she's too pretty. (hide spoiler)]

Not much happens except for a HUGE revelation, but you do learn some backstory (view spoiler)[thanks to Delalieu until Anderson shoots and kills him! How is Anderson alive? (hide spoiler)]

Warner & Juliette ~ (view spoiler)[So sweet that after each mind wipe Warner and Juliette always have a connection and fall in love. (hide spoiler)]

Juliette/Ella's parents ~ Max & Evie are HORRIBLE

I didn't think it was possible to find parents worse than Anderson was to Warner. Evie Sommers might have him beat.

Chapt 1-5:
This story is about Mercedes. Sorry, I've always liked her better than Eddison. I always felt that he was inappropriately personal with the Butterflies and other female victims. (view spoiler)[ I like the skype with Priya, Inara and Victoria-Bliss. Sad that Vic got shot and promoted to unit chief. I'm glad that Vic is still involved supervising the team. Like the new team member, Sterling.

Loved that Special Agent Ken is still around. Glad to hear about Priya, Inara & Victoria-Bliss. (hide spoiler)]

Chpt 6-10:
Sterling ~ (view spoiler)[Wow, cool that she was on the team that investigated Priya's sister's death with Vic's friend, Finney. Finney and Vic conspired to get Sterling transferred to Vic's team.

Mercedes and Eddison take Sterling out on her not-wedding day. Sterling's fiance didn't move with her when she got promoted and transferred. No loss.

I love Mercedes reaction to Sterling's girly, girl decor. (hide spoiler)]

Sarah Carter ~ (view spoiler)[ So sad and amazing that Sarah protected her younger sister, Ashley, from their stepfather's abuse. (hide spoiler)]

Chpt 11-15:
I've been reading other things, because I just haven't felt like reviewing anything...I agree, the first book was the best, but I definitely like this one better than the 2nd book. I thought the 2nd book was just sooooo slooow.

Not many comments, another set of victims. I do love the chemistry between our team, and I kind of love them working around Agent Simpkins. And the Dragonmother of Internal Affairs was an interesting character.

Chpt 16-20:
This is definitely starting to pick up.

Agent Simpkins ~ (view spoiler)[I'm not surprised at all that Simpkins is getting administrative review for alienating local law enforcement. In previous Idaho case, locals uninvited FBI before the case was solved. (hide spoiler)]

Chpt 21-26:
It was too exciting at the end of Chpt 25, that I couldn't stop.

Noah ~ (view spoiler)[So sad that Noah's mother got killed by mistake. I hope Mercedes is correct and he gets to train with an elite gym. (hide spoiler)]

Chpt 27-End:
Mercedes ~ (view spoiler)[I was going to be soooo disappointed if she quit. Glad that she didn't. Sad that the murderer ruined her teddy bear collection for her. (hide spoiler)]

Scrapbooks ~ (view spoiler)[The photo books were so amazing! I am a scrapbooker, so I appreciated it so much. If you had one of those teddy bears, would you keep it? Would it remind you of the horrible things or the rescue? (hide spoiler)]

Part I. Remain ~ (view spoiler)[Tony Loneman has The Drome (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome). Cheyenne. Maxine says he's a medicine person. Dene Oxendene is collecting stories from Native people who live in Oakland, CA to honor his Uncle Lucas. I liked Edwin Black's ramblings. (hide spoiler)]
Part II. Reclaim ~ (view spoiler)[Bill, boyfriend of Edwin's mother, works at the stadium and sees a drone flying around. Bill thinks that Edwin should work and make something of himself. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield is boys great aunt, half sister of their grandmother, Jacquie Red Feather. Orvil, Loother and Lony. Grandmother Opal left boys to learn how to be Cheyenne or Indian on their own. Orvil learns how to dance using YouTube. Quran in Saddam Hussein's blood that was a sin to create and would be a sin to destroy. Native Americans didn't have last names until invading Americans needed to track them.
I do not understand the spider legs in Orvil and Jacquie's legs. (hide spoiler)]
Part III. Return ~ (view spoiler)[Opal sees the ferocious dog flinch when a man yells at it. She understands that the dog was trying to spread the weight of its own abuse. Crying because they wanted him gone. Crying because they wanted him back the way he used to be. The shootout was chaotic and it was difficult for me to keep all the characters straight. Final Thoughts ~ (view spoiler)[Very exciting, but stupid plan to rob pow wow and everyone gets shot. Leaving it open ended so we don't know who survived was super irritating. But honestly, probably another reason that it won all those awards. I did like that they all ended up at the same hospital.

Lots of circling in this book. It was VERY clever how all the characters were all intertwined. It kind of reminded me of Pulp Fiction, that movie was confusing, lots of characters and they were all connected.

I thought Dene taking over his Uncle's project was cool. Someone in my book club thought that the organization of individual POVs in each chapter was a nod to Dene's biographical videos.

The 3D printed guns was a cool tech plot twist, but hopefully it won't give any real life bad guys any ideas.

The drugs, alcohol abuse, sexual abuse and violence was every where in this book. I don't know if there was a chapter without one of those.

I think I'm about half way in, I just started the 4th CD of 8. It's been a while since I listened to Anna Dressed in Blood too.

Thoughts thus far...

Cas ~ (view spoiler)[I got a bit tired of the cryptic warnings to Cas about interacting with Anna. I thought they should just tell him their concerns. He may not listen, but at least he would know what he was messing with.

I felt bad that Cas was missing Anna and seeing her without being able to speak with her was disturbing. And seeing her in agony was more than I thought he could bear.

Carmel ~ (view spoiler)[I was surprised that she befriended the guys at all, but I couldn't believe she was involved with Thomas. I saw that heartbreak coming from the beginning.

She was such a jerk in leaving the gang and breaking up with Thomas. I don't know if I believe that she is in love with Thomas.

But I wouldn't expect a human girl to be able to hang with Cas and Thomas on missions. But she could still be their friend and help with research and not go on missions.

Thomas ~ He is my favorite character! (view spoiler)[I like that he's a powerful witch and a good sidekick for Cas. But Morfran, his grandfather is such a grump.

I felt bad when Carmel dumped him.

Aunt Riika ~ (view spoiler)[Okay, loved this whole part of the story! I did not realize that she was dead. I figured that the drum was made from human skin.

Anna ~ (view spoiler)[Bad enough to be in hell, but being tortured by the Obia (sp?) man for eternity sounded terrible. Though Anna did her share of torture, mayhem and murder, so she might deserve hell. How do you atone for all the bad that she did?

Jestine ~ (view spoiler)[Shoot, I was hoping Jestine was another young person for more Cas support. Did not see that she was trained to be Cas's replacement. Scary how brainwashed she is. When she cut her hand, I thought she was going to do something with her blood and the athame. So don't trust her. (hide spoiler)]

Carmel ~ (view spoiler)[Not sure how I feel about her showing back up. Can you trust her to stay? (hide spoiler)]

Suicide Forest ~ (view spoiler)[Okay, those creepy woods were worth the boring first half of the book! Wow, that was amazingly scary!! I'm so glad that Thomas is going to be okay. But Cas got hurt and Justine saved him. That's got to look bad if that was the part of the test. (hide spoiler)]

Gideon ~ (view spoiler)[ Cas's father brought him into the Order and Gideon left with him. I'm disappointed that he isn't explaining more to Cass. Gideon felt guilty that he didn't warn Cass, Cass had to traverse the Suicide Forest and Thomas got hurt. (hide spoiler)]

Finished
Jestine ~ (view spoiler)[She was okay! And her spell to separate the souls from the Obeahamn made his defeat possible.

So smart to get enough metal to make another athame. So the Order can make another athame and they don't have to kill Cas. I'm glad that she survived. (hide spoiler)]

Thomas ~ (view spoiler)[I'm surprised that Cas picked Thomas to be his anchor. But I trust him more than Gideon and he's a powerful witch. (hide spoiler)]

Cas ~ (view spoiler)[Takes this whole knight in shining armor thing seriously. Sacrificed his life blood to save Anna.

I was disappointed that Cas didn't see his father when he freed the souls from the Obeahamn. I was annoyed that Cas didn't leave as soon as her defeated the Obeahamn, Cas was bleeding out in the real world!

I'm glad that Anna was with her dream Cas and happy. Or was that the real Cas? Cas again put Anna first and let her stay. I'm glad that Cas survived.

And here we go... I thought it was a great start.

Chapt 1-10:

Bree Taggert ~ (view spoiler)[I forget how much I liked her in the first book. I feel bad that she's gotten promoted and the deputies are acting the same or worse.

I think it's often tough for a woman to be the boss over men. Maybe it's different for younger people, but for baby boomers, it is a role reversal and that made it awkward. I had several women bosses and they usually were *cough* "forceful" and I preferred male bosses, because it was more familiar and they didn't need to prove anything.

Deputy Jim Rogers ~ (view spoiler)[Chauvinist jerk. Too bad he's a talented tracker and Bree is understaffed, I wouldn't want him watching my back.

I will be astounded if Matt and Brody's shooting was truly accidental. Hard to give this jerk the benefit of the doubt. (hide spoiler)]

Matt Flynn ~ Yum. He's dreamy. Loyal, smart, perceptive. Let me at him. (view spoiler)[It would be awkward to work with the deputies after being shot and leaving. It says a lot for his confidence that he can work with them. And I'm glad that Bree has him and Todd to help her. (hide spoiler)]

Brody ~ (view spoiler)[Concerned that he hurt his shoulder getting out of the car onto ice. That puppy is probably going to drive Brody crazy. Actually, young lady (pup) going to drive the 2 bachelors crazy.

Love the descriptions of Brody and Matt tracking. (hide spoiler)]

Harper ~ Missing homeless girl. (view spoiler)[For a bit, I thought that Alyssa was imagining Harper and/or the shooting when no trace of the other girl could be found. Honestly, still not sure. Wouldn't there be blood if she'd been shot? Shell casings on lake were evidence supporting a shooter. (hide spoiler)]

Nick West ~ reporter (view spoiler)[Bree handled the camera man not filming the deceased well. I am not a fan of reporter characters. (hide spoiler)]

Alyssa ~ (view spoiler)[Okay, after WalMart and the finding of the kill space, I believe poor Alyssa now. I feel bad that I didn't believe her before. (hide spoiler)]

Bree ~ (view spoiler)[Felt bad for Bree at the autopsy so soon after her sister's death and identifying the body. My husband had to identify his brother and he only now started saying things about it. It's been 8 years.

Smart thinking scratching her assaulter from the cabin. So killer knew about Harper's stealing. I like that Bree took down the biker at the station, so she isn't seen like a damsel in distress after the cabin attack. (hide spoiler)]

Eli ~ (view spoiler)[Wait, he and one of his roommates are both missing? And Brian is the body Brody found in the lake? I don't think things are looking good for Eli. I don't believe he's the killer, so another victim?

Harper = Sariah that Eli took to dinner at his grandmother's house. Convenient that grandma took a picture of the happy couple.

Okay Eli's missing, got into a rogue rideshare. Brian liked Sarah too and the guys had a fight. Brian is dead. Sarah is missing, possibly shot and probably also dead. It sounds bad cuz he has motive, but I don't think Eli is the killer.

Harper ~ (view spoiler)[I think she's dead too. I don't think she would've left all that jewelry behind. I'm annoyed that she stole Alyssa's money at the homeless shelter and then befriended her. What a witch! She didn't work at the cleaning agency, did she privately clean houses or just steal from them?

I also thought that the author was trying to make you think that Alyssa and Harper might be the same person. They were the same height Seen getting in Alyssa's 4 Runner. (hide spoiler)]

Killer ~ (view spoiler)[So are there 2 killers or is Harper's accomplice or killer also killing the boys?

Simplest solution is accomplice killed Harper and needs to eliminate witness Alyssa. And Eli killed Brian accidentally. (hide spoiler)]

Grey Lake Inn ~ (view spoiler)[creepy abandoned old inn. It could only have been worse if they had to search through the place at night chasing someone into it. (hide spoiler)]

Adam ~ (view spoiler)[speaking of creepy places. Adam bought their old house when their parents murder suicide took place?! Why?

Why would Bree agree to go there with him? Sounds horrible. (hide spoiler)]

Chapt 21-30:

Lots of progress on the investigation, but I don't have as many comments.

Earl Harper ~ (view spoiler)[You have to feel bad for Sarah to have a father like Earl and a brother like Rowdy. But just he's a felon, a bully and a jerk doesn't mean he's involved in his daughter's disappearance or death. (hide spoiler)]

Suspect ~ (view spoiler)[Finally got serious leads pointing to Earl Harper's next door neighbor Joe Marcus. Unfortunately, another roommate, Christian is missing and after a motel fire, Alyssa, their witness is also missing.

I never saw this killer coming.

I don't understand why he takes 2 victims at the same time. Wouldn't it be easier to handle one at a time? (hide spoiler)]

Bree ~ (view spoiler)[I feel so sad when Bree is terror stricken over a dog. I'm glad that Matt, Brody & Ladybug will help her with that. (hide spoiler)]

That ending was unexpected. (view spoiler)[I've got to say that I was excited that Matt took the dog away from Earl Harper. Rural stray.

Tell you what. You don't ask where he came from, and I won't ask where you send him. Trust me on this.

I had stopped being suspicious of Alyssa. I was disappointed that Bree and I let our guard down.

I'm glad that Jim Rogers admitted to needing help and that he apologized to Matt. I really disliked him and that was a surprising resolution. His panic attack was scary, but I'm glad that he tackled Joe, though unarmed that might have been a bit reckless.

I read Book #9 in 2016 so most of this was fuzzy.

Chapters 1-5

I liked the characters profiles at the beginning of the book.

Tom ~ (view spoiler)[Going to Malkin tower with Alice to learn how to defeat the Fiend. 7th son of a 7th son. I don't remember much about the Destiny Blade but I'm glad that Tom has one of the 3 magical objects that he needs. Mam says that Tom will need to sacrifice the one he loves most one earth to banish the Fiend, he needs to kill Alice. (hide spoiler)]

Tom's Mam ~ (view spoiler)[Zenobia. 1st lamia who fell in love with Tom's father, a human. But initially, Mam only wanted a 7th son by a 7th son in order to defeat the Fiend. Mam didn't kill Tom's father because she needed to bear his sons and she was falling for him. Mam hobbled the Fiend with 2 of the 3 objects. (hide spoiler)]

Alice ~ (view spoiler)[Can Tom trust her? Alice had noble reasons to practice dark magic, but I worry about her slipping to the dark side. Alice decides to strengthen her dead aunt, witch Agnes Sowerbutts. (hide spoiler)]

Chpt 6 - 15

Tom ~ (view spoiler)[He is really coming into his own. Fighting the unknown creature with the Destiny Blade and slowing time was impressive. But depressing that they just possess a different human body.

Well done, not succumbing to threats. Tom doesn't summon Grimalkin to release the Spook. (hide spoiler)]

Spook ~ Yikes! (view spoiler)[Kind of like Dumbledore, I realize that Tom needs to be out of the protection and guidance of the Spook, but his other apprentices had completed their training and left. I was surprised that they didn't ally more against powerful dark problems.

What a horrible, tortured existence. (hide spoiler)]

Judd ~ (view spoiler)[Blood drained by strigoi. Tom saves him from death. Judd had fallen in love with human Cosmina before she was possessed by a strigoica.

Should Tom trust him? But his Romanian dark creature knowledge might help. (hide spoiler)]

Chpt 16-20

Spook ~ (view spoiler)[I'm happy that he's not dead, but I see foreshadowing and think Tom will lose him soon. (hide spoiler)]

Tom ~ (view spoiler)[didn't tell Alice NOT to bring Grimalkin to Todmorden to the trap. I think Tom should've remembered to tell Alice and Grimalkin should've come anyway. Forgetting to tell Alice made him look scattered. Mirror messages are cool. (hide spoiler)]

Grimalkin ~ (view spoiler)[Love her! I'm glad she came because they truly needed her help. (hide spoiler)]

Judd ~ (view spoiler)[I still don't trust him. They need the help, so I hope he's a Spook again. (hide spoiler)]

Other ~ (view spoiler)[Yay, I missed the Boggart. I found it wise that the Boggart insisted on making the pact with Tom. I think it's funny that it's a giant cat and it burns the food when it's displeased with the guys. (hide spoiler)]

Chpt 21 - end

Creepy stuff ~ (view spoiler)[Cosmina coming back as a blood balloon was pretty creepy. I was impressed that Judd could kill her again.

The final battle with Siscoi was suspenseful. I was anxious.

Okay, I think that other book will be about the Doomdryte.

Alice knows that Tom needs to kill her to defeat the Fiend. She skryed it. I'm glad that she knows. She might be willing to die in sacrifice, but I don't think Tom can do it. Can't we sacrifice the old Spook instead? He's waiting to die. Does Tom love him? Not like Alice. (hide spoiler)]

Tom ~ (view spoiler)[Wow, his blood was poison to Siscoi. I wonder if they can use his blood for other purposes. (hide spoiler)]

I will finish this series. I don't think I will wait 6 more years to read the next book.

I thought it was super cold that Nouria wanted to kill J while J was unconscious. I would've loved to see her try or see Warner level the place.

I was entertained at Warner making the Supreme kids cry.

Warner ~ (view spoiler)[Not sure what the scorpion attempt on Warner's life was supposed to prove, except Warner still has impressive skills. I felt bad that Kenji had to kill the girl. (hide spoiler)]

Anderson ~ (view spoiler)[ Anderson commanding Juliette to amputate her finger was all kinds of messed up. It proved how deep Juliette's brain-washing goes and what a sadistic SOB Anderson is. (hide spoiler)]

Castle ~ (view spoiler)[ Glad that Nouria and Sam asked Castle to be a senior advisor. (hide spoiler)]

Hurray ~ (view spoiler)[ Nazeera is okay too! Just in time to help Warner and Kenji to rescue Juliette. (hide spoiler)]

Finished ~ page 315 - 450

The end just felt rushed and unsatisfying to me. Everything just happened almost in passing. This wasn't my favorite series and this ending was disappointing. I often thought whole books in this series were slow and not much was revealed, but everything was analyzed with too much discussion and this end was completely the opposite, too quick and with the barest of information.

Emmaline ~ (view spoiler)[ I guess I don't know how I expected this to end, but Emmaline's death was anti-climactic. Honestly, the entire ending felt anti-climactic. (hide spoiler)]

I felt bad when Nazeera asked who killed her father. I often forgot that these villains were the parents of some of our heroes. I wondered if the Supreme children became allies and were better rulers than their corrupt, power-hungry parents. (hide spoiler)]
