What have you read lately that wasn’t what you thought it would be?

Looking for more of Karen Russell after loving Vampires in the Lemon Grove, Ale picked up a much earlier work, St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves. It was not what she was expecting. “Almost 20 years later, I feel like we eat these themes for breakfast, and/or turn them on their head and push them out to sea.”

Binti. I thought it was going to be a survival story about a young girl who must use her intellect to survive solo on a ship lost adrift in space. Instead, I got a very moving story about belonging, trauma, and discovering oneself.
