I just added it :) I was in the process of entering that book when my babysitting kiddos got here this morning. I forgot how needy babies and toddlers can be. 😂
Lisa --do you want me to change the way I enter things in the spreadsheet?
I've been entering scavenged food words by word not location
So i found salmon 5 times - -I enter salmon in the block with its 5 locations.
It looks like some entries on the spreadsheet are by location -- as in here's list of everything I found on page 5. This would be a little hard for me since for most books I don't make notes while I read - -I just do searches by word usually before I read.
Also -- usually when I search I'm either searching in my calibre library which gives me location as a %, or for books I don't own I'm searching on Amazon or google ibooks which gives me a page count. So that's why sometimes I list a number and sometimes I list a %. It's also why sometimes the pages are wonky. Example: I found an item on page 434 of book that only had 419 pages ... it's an edition issue.
Last note -- I've realized that the searching on Amazon/ibooks for older books is not reliable. So going forward, for older books that I listening to, I make have to just note the chapter, which I'm pretty sure was approved in the QA.
You don't have to change what you are doing. I've been updating because when I create meals its easier for my by page rather than by item. Since it's a personal thing for me, I don't expect anyone to make any changes to how they are tracking. If we could do it by chapter that would be great. Way easier than by page.
ok I found itQ: If we are reading via audio...for the justification on words in text, is noting the chapter number adequate? Or something more specific?
A: that is fine
MN Lisa wrote: "Susan, There is a book of your highlighted in Purple. Is there a reason for that?"oops...sorry. I meant to post earlier. I had the wrong page before. It is now fixed. I just wanted to let you know I made a change to the page count.
Susan you are a total rock star. I've tried keeping track of items in 4 different audiobooks and cannot manage. I've had to go back into the ebook and search.
Steph wrote: "Susan you are a total rock star. I've tried keeping track of items in 4 different audiobooks and cannot manage. I've had to go back into the ebook and search."THat's mostly what I do -- except I search first. THen if I hear something interesting I didn't search for, I can make a note. It's just some of these older books that I can't do a search - -the amazon or google books search things only have a few pages in the preview.
I'm entering in the spreadsheet and have a couple questions. We Have Till Monday is good for 4 scavenger items. The 27 items in the book areMustard
Sausage
Peppers
Mushrooms
Cream
Spices
Lettuce
Parmesan
Chicken
Pepper
Onion
Avocado
Tomato
Lemon
Bread
Bacon
Beef
Cheddar
Pasta
Butter
Wine
Cheese
Potato
Salt
Pork
Ham
Pickle
is there anything specific we need or should I enter all of them?
The other question is in my current book there are 2 (so far) mentions of salmon with orange fennel sauce. When I finish should I enter the entire dish or separate the items? The book is good for 8 scavenger items iirc
salmon with orange fennel sauceMy understanding is we can use that as one item or we can use the separate pieces of it (which is 4 items). But I'm not so sure I actually have a good understanding of the rules.
Lisa --#82 The Newspaper Nanny -- I didn't read a book with this title
However, the scavenger items in the line are from Mr. Right Now which I did read
Are we still adding books to the sheet? I have a few 300+ page books I can add
Looks like April accidentally wrote over that. I put it back.We have 74 Books over 200 pages. I'd say add the over 300-page books since we get more items for those.
MN Lisa wrote: "Looks like April accidentally wrote over that. I put it back.We have 74 Books over 200 pages. I'd say add the over 300-page books since we get more items for those."
Not sure if it matters in your calculations...but it's 161 -300 that are worth 4 items.
I started making meals the other day in the meals tab on the planning sheet. I know that a couple of other people are making meals too. Is that what the meal options tab is? I don't want to overlap anyone else's work.I also had a question: The meal of the month, the fiji curry, doesn't have a drop-down option on the list. It's a curry but it only needs 6 ingredients and is fresh not frozen.

Not sure if..."
No. My calculation for the # of items is based on their calculation. I just limited to those 300 pages and more. Its on the Summary Tab.
Vian wrote: "I started making meals the other day in the meals tab on the planning sheet. I know that a couple of other people are making meals too. Is that what the meal options tab is? I don't want to overlap..."The meal options are available descriptions and options for sandwiches and stuff to help with the meals and shop front. I'm better with concrete things to create than making them up from the options found.
Question --How are you keeping track of what has been used? For example: Book #12 The Inmate -- 8 items are allowed, 8 have been used. But there are 7 blocks turned red with 16 items in those blocks.
I'm thinking -- what if later you realize we need one more rice to complete a meal. This book does have rice, but I don't know how you can tell whether or not rice was the item used out of all the items in Col U, row 15. As far as I can tell, you'd have to search through all of the meals to see if it was used.
Or, is this just not something to be concerned about?
Are we finished updating the spreadsheet for this month then? I have a couple books I've tracked but won't be able to get to it until tomorrow morning.

Sorry about that

The rules state:
==============
RESTAURANT NAME
At the start of the challenge, name your restaurant and give a (max. 5 sentence) blurb “about” the restaurant. This may just give you an advantage for round 2….
===============
To be eligible for an advantage your team blurb needs to be on your spreadsheet by 23 September
At What the Fork, we wish to offer our personal rendition of gourmet cuisine with an innovative gastronomic take on traditional cooking methods, locally sourced produce and the legacy of our shared food heritage. Moreover, we regard it as a personal challenge to provide an eclectic menu and let its distinctive flavors and particular regional character brighten up the world. This is on our official spreadsheet.
It looks like we have around 46 books in the 8 items or more categories, 44 in the 4 items category.1. So for the rest of the month, should I only bother with the 8 items or more page counts?
2. For the 4 items books (161-300 pages)...is there any particular item you are in need of ...for example: if you need more lemon, then it makes sense to track books in this page range that have lemon.
3. For the rest of the month do we do the spell out letters for 8 items or more books if that is the only option?
I fell behind in my recording - -I've got 4 books in the 8 items range, and 4 books in the 4item range, and a bunch in 2 items.
I can do the searching if needed. Please let me know.
I think we will be good and can just make meals with what we have, unless something you are reading has a really cool ingredient or something I'd say not to worry for the rest of the month.
I’m dumb and forgot about this game. I haven’t been tracking items but just finished a 700 page book. I have time to go back in and search for drinks/desserts if needed. Let me know 😊
Steph wrote: "I’m dumb and forgot about this game. I haven’t been tracking items but just finished a 700 page book. I have time to go back in and search for drinks/desserts if needed. Let me know 😊"We have 4 books over 500 pages so that gives us 48 items for drinks/desserts. I think that would be enough?
I'm going to work on it on Wednesday to give time to review before I move over to the offiical sheet.
Ok. I moved books with less than 200 Pages to the overflow. I'm thinking of doing the following. 12 NA Drinks
12 Drinks
24 Desserts
12 Coffee
12 Tea
7 Fish and Chips with Vinegar
7 Fish and Chips
10 Specials
7 Salads
7 Pasta
7 Quiche
7 Curry
7 Sandwiches
This will use between 400 and 600 items and if my calculation is correct, we currently have 509 items available.
What do you think?
**I'm saving a re-read of the Confessions series to October since Julian is a cook and they talk about food a lot. Should get some good ingredients for that.
Why 200 pages? Books from 161-300 pages are worth the same. Why not move the books with ingredients we dont need? Also, I though we were supposed to make as many meals as possible?
Susan A wrote: "Why 200 pages? Books from 161-300 pages are worth the same. Why not move the books with ingredients we dont need? Also, I though we were supposed to make as many meals as possible?"
This just gives us a starting point to make our restaurant well-rounded with meals. If we are working through and need an ingredient we can check the overflow and move as needed. It's just to give a starting point.
Once we create that if we have more stuff to use we can create more to maximize the ingredients we found.
I'm also thinking next month we need to make sure to track the initials. We can spell PASTA with 5 letters, but if we want to create a pasta dish we need 7 ingredients. That works for PASTA, QUICHE (6 vs 7), and CURRY (5 vs 7).
Are you sure? I would have thought we could spell pasta, which counts as 5 ingredients, but then we’d need to spell something else, like ham, in order to meet the minimumOr spell a type of pasta that has the minimum letters like ravioli
Susan A wrote: "Are you sure? I would have thought we could spell pasta, which counts as 5 ingredients, but then we’d need to spell something else, like ham, in order to meet the minimumOr spell a type of pasta ..."
HMM. Thought so, but let me check again.
You are right it has to meet the minimum letters.Spell out whatever you want as long as it is a salad, or sandwich, etc, and you fit the letters allowed for the meal
I still think we should track and use more Spell next month. If we spell "Ravioli" we can give it a description of "Mushroom ravioli in lemon cream sauce", without having to find mushrooms and lemon in the books.
Ok. I set the Meals Page with the lines for minimum ingredients based on what I was thinking above. There are 426 lines, so we have room to make more as needed. I'm going to go through tomorrow and try and complete some more meals. We could probably use someone to look at the completed meals and add a description to the store front. That's the piece i'm not so good at.
MN Lisa wrote: "Ok. I set the Meals Page with the lines for minimum ingredients based on what I was thinking above. There are 426 lines, so we have room to make more as needed. I'm going to go through tomorrow and..."I can take a look at it tonight. I'll have to look at the example.
Are we working in the practice spreadsheet?
And, I can't figure out how to see the missing line in the spreadsheet . Example: In the Kitchen Meals Created tab, I can't figure out how to see lines 151-187
Can someone look and see if I am doing this right? I did descriptions for meals 1 -20.And boy is it painful. I really wish my middle kid was home from college. He is a very good and fast writer. He can bang out an essay about anything, whether he knows anything about it or not.
I have read some books but haven't had a chance to put them in the spreadsheet. Do you need me to add those or no?
I finished descriptions through #33. I'm really just looking stuff up on google and tweaking it to fit the item and category and word count. It's not really a fast thing. For next month, I don't think we should wait until the end of the month. It's too much work at once.
I'm a little concerned about curry descriptions as I've never had one and they look gross to me. Hopefully I can find descriptions with google.
This does need to be finished on Sept 30. THere is a countdown timer somewhere.
I did confirm that we can re-use descriptions -- so we don't need a bunch of different fish & chip descriptions.
I'll try to look at it again later tonight.
i havent posted much this month. Sorry, i finished up my SS books and i have been doing a few other challenges. with drug brain from the pain pills i have a hard time concentrating on words lol. i can read but not if i have to think and read at the same time iykwim.
MN Lisa --In the Kitchen Meals Created Tab , line 144
The Trouble with #9 shows up as NA because it is book 81 in the Round 1 book tabs. Need to move it up to above 80 if we want to use it.
I think we have a few meals left, mostly quiche and curry, so we can always change those out for something else if we want.I tried to remember to do the description when I finished the meal, but I didn't always get to it.
I gotta check my team's SH posts and do those for my books still. I should get back to it later tomorrow.
I agree to not wait. I think it might be good to start with the meals like I did earlier this week to have a basis for what we want to be searching for and then fill in as we find items.
Like I want to make a Salmon BALT sandwich. I add that to the meals created and shop front and then work to find the items among the books....That's kinda what I did with the "Meal Options" tab in the spreadsheet.
Ok. Added Descriptions for ALL meals and then listed the corresponding ingredients on the meals page. Now we just need to go through and find the books and items. Hopefully we can find them all. I even did the curries.
