My husband read this a couple of years ago and found it pretty exciting. It took the plot and wrote it as a prose adventure story. My high school daughter is reading the Odyssey this year and I thought this would be fun for her.

I think there must be many retellings of the story. One I'm aware of is The Firebrand by Marion Zimmer Bradley, which is from the point of view of the prophetess, Cassandra, who foretold the fall of Troy. It's a bit cheesy, but it was a lot of fun to read.
There's Ilium by Dan Simmons, which is the plot of the Iliad and the Odyssey set into a futuristic sf setting with bits of Proust and Shakespeare's The Tempest and sonnets sprinkled in. (Even if that's not what you're looking for, it's a fun read.)
Simmons likes doing that. His Hyperion series is very roughly based on a recycling of The Canterbury Tales, for example. His two ancient Greece retellings are Ilium and Olympos.
There is also The Penelopiad The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus, even though I do not think it is the exact book you are looking for.
Thanks so much for all your suggestions, but he just kept shaking his head. We finally went back to the library and found Achilles A Novel. This is my first experience with goodreads, but I think I'll hang around. Thanks again!
