The pod is packed and scheduled for pickup. My arrival date is set, unless weather prevents travel. Going to visit my son and grandson in Phoenix this coming weekend. The next Friday I pack my car with my remaining clothes and stuff and head East. Chef decided city opportunity combined with being with me was his priority and he is bringing the Miata next month.

My goal now is to enjoy the peace in the desert with many beers and bottles of white zin in what time I have left here.

Lizzie | 2057 comments J. wrote: "Be sure to take in those desert sunsets."

I am in the high desert, surrounded by mountains. My boyfriend is the chef at a B&B and wedding venue next to the country's largest hummingbird sanctury where people come from all over the world to get a bird on their list. It is only a mile for me to get to that road to drive to the top, which is then all about gaining height ( I am at 4200 feet). That is the nearest range, but in the other directions are also mountain ranges and we can see far in the desert. I will miss the view. It will be strange to have it replaced with a city skyline, Lake Michigan shoreline, snowy days, and very green foliage.

My son is in Phoenix, so I won't have a reason to be in the SE corner of the state again. Phoenix doesn't have this view or anything near it.

Then be sure to hang around after twilight and watch the stars. In July, the two most important constellations are Scorpio and Sagittarius. This video will help you find and recognize them.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8071 comments Lizzie, you talk about being disabled and having a hard time, and people feel sorry for you, but you look pretty good and always seem to be living a more extravagant life than most people could dream of with your car and condo, and boyfriend, so happy. Good for you. But maybe stop complaining.

Maybe have some empathy. Like I said, looks are deceiving. Income doesn't determine whether you have a relationship. And, you have no idea how much pain I live in and how hard it is to do things. Imagine life where you can never pick up a gallon of milk, hold a knife properly, turn a door knob easily. or to know that if you pick up your grandbaby today, you will suffer for the next 3 days from having done so.

Believe me, 80% of those who apply for disability or automatically denied. Yes, I had an appeal attorney lined up because that's what I expected. To know you are so far from ever being able to work again that social security approves you on the 1st application says alot. You, like the people in the grocery store, are making assumptions without really knowing my life. We all do so about many things - but doing so about disability, especially since being there, really "ices my cookies".

message 62: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments If all disabled were economically secure, what could be better, even allowing for an occasional and hopefully small-scale abuse?
Complaining or not, it's another thing. I guess we all do at times, but are not exactly excited when others do it too :)
Should be about fun stuff

We all complain at various points about a variety of things.

I find it interesting how many people want to control how someone spends the small benefit others receive when not working to the extent that they complain about what food someone buys. In the USA, we frequently hear and read in media that the government should prevent them from doing so while at the same time those same people and outlets complain about how much the government controls things in our lives. People want the government to control the things that those at poverty and low income wages do because they feel like its their money or that it will take away from them. In America, the caste system still exists and it is based on economic wealth.

message 64: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie | 2057 comments Time to get back to fun stuff. My only key to the Miata is stuck in the trunk key hole. Mazda wants $101 for a key and $265 to program the chip. Because I needed a locksmith to get the key out (the dealership said they can't do it), I discovered the locksmith can do the same thing and I can get two keys with the chip programmed for $200. If anyone is dealing with the same issue of a worn out key or a lost key (in my case, both), try a locksmith vs. a dealer.

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments You know your society far better.
On the other hand, I can imagine people getting baffled when they see someone on social security driving a better car or living a better lifestyle while they feel they work their ass off, but aren’t getting very far. They assume that either they do something wrong or the social security is excessive . However, individual situs can be so nuanced that I wouldn’t judge by stereotypes or just from appearance.
In my own case, with a broken hip and a metal rod holding it, I would be deemed 100% disabled if I were a footballer, but 100% functional as a lawyer 😎

I don't have an issue with being baffled by it or wondering why. I do take issue with dictating what kind of meat I can buy or whether I buy precut, premade items that cost more. $189 per month for groceries is what the government paid here at the time. It hasn't gone up very much. Do we deny people cake and cookies because they are poor?

It is the same argument against universal health care that people here make in the USA. We shouldn't have it because I worked and paid into Medicare but you didn't work so you should do without.

Disability takes into account whether you can do another job other than your current one. Unfortunately, because of my situation, I am deemed to be unable to do anything. The problem with nerve damage to hands thru shoulders. If it had been only one arm, I would have been given only a percentage of SSDI and told I can work parttime at least. In my case, I am so limited as to how long I can do something with my hands that they decided I wasn't even expected to try, especially with the amount of pain involved. For me, it was devastating career wise as a paralegal and emotionally as someone who did everything from work to teaching to coaching Little League.

We all judge based on our own experiences, and I understand that. But, having been there, I can say, - don't judge; you don't know - to those in line at the grocery store, but I was too embarassed and in pain to do so at the time.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8071 comments I do believe some people need help. My brother and his wife make just a little more than the limit for food stamps. So, yes, they resent being in line at the grocery store behind someone buying nice cuts of meat and pulling out their food stamp card and getting in a nice car -- while they're buying hamburger and hot dogs and getting in their old car. They work and pay taxes. Something isn't right there, and I think it's fraud.

No questions here! lol

I am still trying to un-see the lime green uniforms worn by the Seahawks! lol

I did see dozens of penalties though for the football games. :) Some of those are old video clips which now rules have changed - like leading with the helmet.

I only watch football though - it is rare I watch soccer games.

message 73: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Yeah, nice compilations. It's a different game though. "Foot" is much less meaningful in an American football to give a name to the game. To me it looks much more similar to rugby, which is also a distant relative of football (soccer)

You do realise that soccer is a shortened form of Association Football.

The whole world calls it football and doesn't much care what those who don't have to say about it.

I gather Aussie Rules is just an excuse for a good punch up, J.

message 84: by [deleted user] (new)

Ha ha, don't know if you were implying this anyway, but 'Rules' is a bit of a misnomer, isn't it? 😂

message 85: by J. (new)

J. Gowin | 7977 comments They use their hands, and they still call it "football". Are the Australians in violation of your earlier limitation?

message 86: by [deleted user] (new)

No, because they appear to use their feet too. It's the reference to there being rules that offends me.

message 87: by [deleted user] (new)

Do you remember that character called 'Dog' off Crocodile Dundee? That bloke would be the face of Aussie Rules.

J. Gowin | 7977 comments Beau wrote: "No, because they appear to use their feet too. It's the reference to there being rules that offends me."

The NFL kicks the ball at kickoff, punting, and field goals. Of course, when an NFL kicker is doing his job several 200+ lb men are trying to turn him into a stain on the sod.

message 89: by [deleted user] (new)

I've tried on multiple occasions to like NFL but I can't.

Too many stoppages in play and the use of so much padding and helmets offends my sense of manliness.

You get that sort of physicality in the warm up of an Aussie Rules game ;)

message 92: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 538 comments In fact, I dislike Aussie Rules intensely. Give me football any day, but I quite enjoy rugby league also, which is a bit like NFL but without stoppages or padding.

Oh, and the same team has to attack AND defend.

message 93: by [deleted user] (new)

Adrian, I really like rugby league too. Much prefer it to rugby union.

It's v exciting to watch and I've huge admiration for the players, who are everything a sportsman should aspire to he.
