An author's debut book
A book that involves a murder

Bottom:
A book involving wolves or werewolves
A Christmas book

Polarizing:
A book related to the Harlem Renaissance
A book related to a recipient of Time Magazine's Person of the Year award

Listopias:
A character that might be called a Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, or Spy
An author's debut book
A book that involves a murder

The next round of suggestions will open on Saturday, August 6 around noon CST.

(School starts tomorrow and my schedule is BUSY so I thought I'd post the results a few hours early. Hope everyone is ok with that!)

message 3: by LeahS (new)

LeahS | 1403 comments Thanks, Emily. I'm pleased Tinker, Tailor was popular, bit sad about wolves and the Harlem Renaissance.

message 4: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments Yay I love surprises! I voted for 2 of the 3 tops so I’m a happy gal. I’m fine with murder, but it’s just so easy I didn’t bit either way.

Best of luck with the first day! It's crazy how different states are. My 1st day in NJ is Sept. 6 this year. But of course we end in the June 20's every year.

Results wise, I'm not in love with the TTSS one, but I'm sure I'll find something. I seem to read a lot of debuts unintentionally so I'm sure I'll fill that easily and the murder one, too.

message 10: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11215 comments Mod
I'm pretty happy with the results... I upvoted debut and murder, and the TTSS one will be easy to fill with a historical fiction novel. I'm going for easy prompts next year, so this group hits the sweet spot of narrowing my options but not being too difficult for me.

message 11: by Thomas (new)

Thomas I’m sad that Christmas got bottomed and gobsmacked that murder got in when I actually thought of it about a minute before I suggested it. Ironic hey

Given I'm in Australia I love the results being posted in Australian time....I usually have to remember the date is the next day for me.

I only upvoted for one of the winners (debut book) but I'm fine with the others which were neutral for me. I did downvote the 2 polarizing ones but the 2 bottoms weren't in my votes at all.

message 13: by NancyJ (last edited Aug 04, 2022 07:49PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3641 comments Yikes, I just logged on because I realized I forgot to vote. (My brain doesn't work when I don't sleep.) That's OK because my votes wouldn't have changed anything. I'm happy for Debut, TTSS, and even murder too. Thomas- I think everyone likes a murder mystery once in a while. So good one!

I like that TTSS will work for a book about a veteran soldier (which didn't make it last year). I'll probably read a spy novel, maybe the one that came before Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

After reading the comments on the voting thread, it sounds like a book about the jazz age, or the 1920s or the roaring twenties, might work for a lot of people. It's a great era. I'm not sure why 1920's Chicago is so popular now. A friend went to a party where everyone had to dress up like flappers and gangsters (and Al Capone). Maybe musical theater?

I think the person who suggested the Harlem Renaissance prompt should feel good that a lot of people talked about it, looked it up, and learned something new. It's nice to focus on achievement instead of racism.

I hope the Time Magazine gets resubmitted later on, maybe with some good book suggestions for people who don't want to read biographies.

message 14: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2922 comments I’m all for posting results based on Australian time zone!

I had a top, bottom and neutral vote all make the top. I’ve read many of the debut books on the top debut listopias so I’m not thrilled that it made it, but it is doable. I’m glad to see TTSS make it. If I would have had more votes, I would have upvoted the murder prompt, so I’m glad it made it.

message 15: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3850 comments I’m happy with the top 3, especially debut. I already have a list of 29 books. And, there will be more to choose from that get published during the 2nd half of this year and in 2023!

message 16: by Shannon SA (new)

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 699 comments YAY! voted for all 3, so happy :)

message 17: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Really happy TTSS made it in. I might finally get round to reading Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway who is le Carre's son.

I think all the Grishaverse books would work too since, one of the types of Grisha is a tailor, most of them are soldiers, David is always tinkering and there is a bunch of spying. So you'd get to tick off all professions!

I'll look forward to picking up a 2023 debut author for that one.

I don't read much crime fiction these days but people still seem to be getting murdered all over the place so that one's pretty easy.

I knew the wolves would be bottomed but that's going on my rejects (and if Popsugar don't do a challenge next year I'll definitely have time for a rejects challenge).

message 18: by Steve (new)

Steve | 615 comments Ellie wrote: "and if Popsugar don't do a challenge next year ..."

Are they not planning to? That’s surprising.

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Steve wrote: "Are they not planning to? That’s surprising."

There were some redundancies recently that included Tara who usually does the challenge. So no one knows if someone else will pick it up.

message 20: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments I'm definitely going to have to BIO murder and debut book because they are very broad easy prompts. I think for murder I'll do something other than the expected mystery/psychological thriller/etc genres, quite possibly sci-fi. And for debut I'll probably do something like that was nominated for a noteworthy prize like the Booker or the Women's Prize.

Excited that TTSS made the list! That's the first interesting prompt on next year's list.

I'm not surprised Christmas was on the bottom but I don't understand why so many people think a Christmas book has to be religious or a Hallmark movie in print form.

message 21: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Ralph | 188 comments I'm happy with these choices. I would have liked to see the Harlem Renaissance because I had a couple of books in mind, but that's ok. Murder is a pretty wide open choice for me - I read a lot of books that involve a murder, so I may have to make that one harder for myself. I also read a lot of debut books. I should have a plethora of options available for these. Time to go book hunting now! :)

I’m always learning new things with this group. I knew Tara was no longer working for Pop Sugar but I was not sure what you meant by ‘redundancies.’

Do you call it being laid off? When employers get rid of your job (or more like they make the remaining staff do your job on top of theirs).

Yes, lay-off’s in the US, or downsizing. I did know the British term thanks to reading books set there, but it took me a minute. My first interpretation was that there were too many people named Tara in a certain group! I didn’t even realize Pop Sugar was a company with paid employees. I thought it was something like ATY but maybe made some money from ads or links to Amazon.

Here the word choice often has to do with the reason, lay offs, let go, or downsizing (pink slip would be more slang), fired, or quit. I was not sure why she was not working there anymore. I also didn’t know several members of the staff had been let go. I like the term redundancies and will start using it.

message 26: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I've heard redundant when a company acquires another one and then lays people off, they are redundant because there were multiple people doing the same job (e.g. bookkeeper).

I've always liked the UK word "sacked" for getting fired and would love for that to become common usage in the US.

As for PS, I saw Tara's post that she wasn't there anymore but also didn't realize that she'd been let go along with others. That doesn't bode well for the company but I always wonder how sites like that stay in business.

As for our challenge, I like these results. Book with a murder is an easy one for me so I'll have to figure out how to make it more challenging. For a debut I'm going to do a new author with no other books, not the debut of a well-known author.

Perri | 886 comments Does anyone else feel like a little thirll of anticipation when they click the Results hyper link?

Very doable results and I like the TTSS novelty.

Emily, hope your school start goes smoothly. With your mod role and pregnancy I don't know how you juggle it all, then I learn you're a teacher, and it all becomes clear!!

I would have loved to see Harlem Renaissance as I need to learn more about the artists, I only know the big ones like Romare Bearden and Augusta Savage. I am shocked that it wasn't in the bottom, so many people said the voted against it!

Also, the word used determines if you can receive unemployment. When I had to fire someone because she was a nincompoop, I used the word "lay-off." Course when I saw her a few months later and mentioned I had not heard from unemployment to approve her claim, she said she was waiting for them to call her, didn't know she had to start the process. Sigh!

I use sacked- was unaware it wasn't common US usage. Noone has ever asked me explain the phrase.

message 30: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments These are good results for me, I didn't vote for the murder one because I read a ton of mystery's so will be easy to fill, I might need to find a cleaver way to make it more exciting. The other 2 were in my top.

I thought the Harlem Renaissance sounded like it could be fun so wouldn't be mad if that made another appearance.

message 31: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Normally redundant means not enough work exists whereas sacked implies you were got rid of for something you did.

message 32: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1340 comments Thomas wrote: "Normally redundant means not enough work exists whereas sacked implies you were got rid of for something you did."
This is how it is in Australia. Either sacked or fired. If you are made redundant there is a pay out you get. but you don't get that if you are sacked/fired - which can only happen in certain circumstances. It's quite hard to get rid of employees outside their probationary period.

message 33: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabeth1234561) | 224 comments Pretty excited about these. I have a few cozy mysteries I want to read with sewing plots/Murders so that'll be a fun way to take care of those in the new year.

Maybe last week (I’m not positive on the time but fairly recent) she posted on the PopSugar FB page tha she was no longer a admin for that page since she no longer is working for PopSugar. I only look at the group page once a week or so and I just happened to see her post.

I am no longer at POPSUGAR but wanted to drop in a message that I am so grateful for my time with you all, and I’ll still be here I just won’t be moderating this group anymore (or creating the POPSUGAR Reading Challenge). 💙 I will have a lot more time to get through my tbr pile, so all recs (especially murder mysteries!) are always appreciated. Thank you all!”

Thank you! I'm in the Facebook group but don't check it so often, but I'm sad to see Tara go.
