Erica Ellis (ericainmn) | 48 comments I really like what you said about an editor's job being to make a manuscript more perfectly itself. This touches on two things a writer should know: that their editor should always be striving to maintain their voice during an edit (if your editor is trying to make your book sound like their book find a new editor!), but also that they must have realistic expectations about what an editor can do for them. An editor, no matter how good, can't guarantee that a book will be a bestseller after it is edited. If this is an author's first book, being "more perfectly itself" may not be strong enough to earn a publishing contract or bestseller status. But as an author works with an editor to improve a manuscript, they will learn much about themselves as writer that they can apply to their next book.

Good post!
