Xanthe and her mother, Flora, leave London and establish an antique store in Marlborough. Xanthe has a sensitivity to some old things that as she holds them they begin to sing to her. And so it was when they were looking for inventory for their new store, she finds a chatelaine that sings loud in her ear and vibrates in her hand. Back home she discovers an old jail in her back yard and while holding the chatelaine she time travels back to 1605. Not staying long she returns to her current time and is confronted by a ghost that demands that she returns to 1605 and saves her daughter, Alice, from certain death by hanging. The ghost informs her that if she doesn't do her bidding that her vengenance would be taken out on Flora, Xanthe's mother.
Brackston makes this ghost story, time travel, love story so believable and so thrilling that you are drawn back to the book with anticipation of a pleasant time reading a captivating story. I was transported with Xanthe and walked those steps along side her. A story well told. An insight into life in the 1600's that was most enlightening.
Yes, there are four in the series (thus far). It is recommended that they are read in order. I have my eyes on the 2nd one and will probably pick it up so I can revisit these endearing characters once more.
