Hey guys so I was wondering... someone suggested the book Good Girl, Bad Blood for the August BOTM but since that is the second book in a series, shouldn't we make like a rule that you can only suggest the first book in the series unless it's like a standalone interconnected series that don't matter if read out of order?
Because I know that it's the second book to the A Good Girl's Guide to Murder book which was the BOTM for June but for people who didn't read the book they would not be able to read book 2 if it won.
I hope I made sense :) what do you all think? or do we keep things as is?

I think from now on we need to make it a rule that if the book is in a series then the first book needs to be recommended first.
I think it would be fine if Good Girl, Bad Blood won, since A Good Girl's Guide to Murder was last month's BOTM. However, I agree that usually only the first book in a series can be nominated. I think this is a special case.
And about adding June birthday points, awesome! Perhaps I'll comment on everyone's thread, and if we could each change that on our team threads, that would be great.
Okay so from now on only the first books in series can be nominated and just this once it’s okay that Good Girl, Bad Blood was nominated specially since we don’t even know if it will be in the poll yet and then it might not even win.
I’ve updated my team thread to include June birthdays as well :)

Yes! We probably don't have to mention it in the BOTM nomination thread, but from now on we can just put in the rules "Must suggest the first book if it's in a series" or something like that.
That's great! :D

Hey! I'm going to start a mod read for Just for the Summer by Abby Jeminez. I'll bee adding the chat for it in a few minutes!
Hey! for the point updates, I won't be able to update until next Monday when I'm back home from vacation.
Hey guys so I just noticed that 2 more books that are not the first book in the series were nominated for August BOTM: “The Final Gambit” which is book 3 and “Killer Instinct” which is book 2 in a separate series. And since Killer Instinct has been seconded it is supposed to go on the poll but shouldn’t we remove both of those books from the nominations and announce on the chat to everyone that only first books in series are allowed to be nominated?

OK good to know- were you able to let your team know? Have fun! :D

Yeah, I think that's a good idea. Members can always buddy read books that they want to read that aren't the first book in a series.
Additionally, I was thinking that since members can suggest as many books as they'd like, we should make it a rule that only thirded books go on the poll, so that on the poll votes aren't split between a lot of different books. What do y'all think?

Yeah, we could also just let it slide for this month and reinforce that rule for September:)

I don’t think we should wait until September’s BOTM to add that rule because I don’t think it’s fair to add a book to the poll that people won’t be able to read unless they’ve read the previous books in the series.
I wouldn’t mind making a thirded book advance to the poll.

True didn’t think about that I think we should make it a rule because I am thinking if it was me I wouldn’t want to read book 5, then 1, then last book.
Awesome, so only the first book in a series can be suggested (though buddy reads are welcome) unless it's the next book from the previous BOTM.
What do you think about only thirded books going on the poll, V?

Right I’m fine if people want to buddy read the series that aren’t the first book but I think Thirded is going to be confusing but I don’t know any other better way to go about this.
That's true, it might be confusing. How about instead of making separate lists for suggested books vs seconded books, there's just one list with the number of people who seconded it? Most voted for books go at the top, least at the bottom, and only thirded books go on the poll (if there are still too many books, then fourthed, and if there are two little, than top 5 or something like that). So for example,
4- The Hobbit
3- Hunger Games
3- People We Meet on Vacation
3- Throne of Glass
2- Red Queen
2- To Kill A Mockingbird
1- ....

I think that seems a little confusing too no? I think that as long as we exclude books that are not the first book in the series we can keep the seconded books advance to the poll like we’ve had it for so long now. I don’t mind seeing a lot of books in the poll because we can vote extra in the comments of the poll and then select the top two like we do now :)
What do you guys think?
What do you guys think?
Sounds good to me:) I'll include that in the next group broadcast, but it might be a week or so (I don't want to seem like I'm barraging people with messages).
thanks for updating the scores Catherine! the internet has been iffy but I will be back home Sunday and can fully edit the score with my computer
Sounds good Catherine and we'll take care of the group until you come back! Hope you have a good little break :)
Hey guys I hope you're all doing great!
I noticed we still don't have the September BOTM nomination thread up, do you guys want me to create it?

Are we going to think of new ideas for a reading challenge or do you want to give everyone a months break and then get back at it? Does the winning team get to choose the theme or anything?
I think if we do let the winning team choose the theme, we should have options to give them, or else it's almost like their reward is doing our job XD
As for timing, I'm thinking that we can use the remainder of August to brainstorm and do signups, and then start the next challenge early September (doesn't necessarily have to be September 1st).

Okay I will chat with my team and think of some more book prompts, themes, and activity prompts and then once we get ideas and everyone’s opinion I will post all the details in here before we actually make the post.
Okay sounds good and I agree that we’ll brainstorm all August and then the challenge will start sometime in September :)
Awesome! Yes, thanks for checking in, V. And I almost forgot- here's the doc for this challenge: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1s...

Your welcome and as I think of ideas I will add them to the template. Who wants to be in charge of creating the thread once things are finalized and putting people on teams?

Hi y'all- sorry, I haven't had time to brainstorm for the challenge at all. I think I can; I might be a little slow putting some people on teams, though.
Speaking of the challenge, one of our members gave us a fantastic idea on the Discord group: instead of book prompts, we can have a slightly different format where members try to read books that start with each letter in a phrase, e.g. "Happy Halloween," and then once they knock out all the letters, they get extra points.
(We'd still keep writing & activity/page points/review points, etc.)

Hey everyone!
Catherine that does seem like a cool idea to try out for the challenge :)
V I just checked and for the first book, there is no tie. For the second there is a tie right now but hopefully over the next couple of days one will win over the other.

I know we have not created October's BOTM but we can create that on September 31st, 2024. Do you all want me to still be in charge of this or does someone else want to give this a try?
