When Simon Boudlin, itinerant musician, first spied the Irish-born indentured servant and nanny, Doris Mary Dillon, he knew that he would wed her one day. Simon's youthful appearance kept him from being conscripted into the Confederate Army until near the eve of the end of the Civil War. When he and other musicians were asked to play during a dinner to celebrate the surrender of the Confederate Army. This was when he first noticed Doris Dillon and began to dream of his future marriage to her and settling down on farmland in post-Civil War Texas. With his goal set, he encourages the other musicians to accompany him playing saloons and parties throughout Eastern Texas as a means to live out his dream.
Like News of the World, much of this book is an oddesey with a series of adventures. Although I enjoyed the former better, this one was a close second. The protagonist of News of the World, Capt. Kidd even makes a short appearance in this book. The characters and post-Civil War setting are so well developed, the reader finds him or her transported along with this traveling band.
