Clean alternative to Steven King?

Looking for a clean alternative to Steven King novels for my husband? Not sure if there is a "clean" horror book--haha--but maybe something super engaging--psychological thriller or suspense?

If you click on the group bookshelf (right hand menu on a PC; not sure where it is on a phone), there is a tag for books that may be interesting to men or boys, as well as a few other relevant book tags. There may be something there.

They're not necessarily thriller but crime books have some of those aspects. I'm reading a Randy Singer right now and I've read quite a few Robert Whitlow.

Robert Whitlow books are clean but not at all "horror". He's a worthwhile and stellar read, however.
