Lori Z | 2086 comments Finally did some gophering and this is what I came up with for this challenge.

So Terrible a Storm: A Tale of Fury on Lake Superior
Snowbound
Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History
The Children's Blizzard
The Year of the Storm
Cover of Snow

Now to decide which one. It will probably come down to availability at the library.

I had forgotten that Dead Heat was being released on the 3rd of March. Hopefully it gets approved.

message 153: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments It is the Alpha and Omega series. The series starts with a short piece published as part of an anthology called On the Prowl. I've read that story three or four times now, and I've reread the first full length book in the series, Cry Wolf, more than once. I'm not sure quite why I find these characters so compelling, but I do.

Elinaly Asking just in case - will Chill of Fear count?

Weather forecast: "The airport at Grand Marais, Minnesota, reported a wind chill of -50 late last Sunday night"
:D

Oh good one. Yup, okay.

message 159: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Lori, I'm going to be reading Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History for this challenge. I'm looking forward to it. I read The Children's Blizzard last year and thought it was good, sad but good.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Rusalka, I just found out where "always take the weather with you" comes from. Excuse my ignorance... :)

message 161: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments No worries at all :D I only really choose these names as the songs get in my head and I like sharing the pain.

Also, off Connie's score. She read a book with only trees on it. Not one tree, a couple. But nothing else. So I gave her the points, and will do for you all as well

message 162: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2086 comments Tasha, I haven't decided what I'm going to read yet, but its good to know that The Children's Blizzard is a good read, even though its sad. I hope you enjoy Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I created the challenge widget on the main page for those who like to use it.

message 164: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments We have a purple, environmentally conscious, shape shifting alien on the main page? Awesome!

(please tell me there is at least one other child of the early 90s here who has some clue what I am talking about)

message 165: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Barney? No, couldn't be. He was just a purple dinosaur. Alf?

message 172: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I watched Widget a few times back in Uruguay a hundred years ago. But I specially remember him because we had a teacher in 9th grade who we called Widget because he looked just like the purple one.

message 173: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Oh your poor teacher! lol

We had a Maths one, who I ended up doing youth camps with later in life, who looked exactly like Beavis.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sandra wrote: "widget the world watcher?"

I finally had to google it before I died of curiosity. Never saw it on tv.. I guess my girls were all too old by then to be watching it.

Berit | 641 comments I'm going to Google it, right now. I have never heard of such a thing before!☺️

message 176: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

message 177: by Ronyell (new)

Ronyell (rabbitearsblog) | 46 comments I'll give this a shot and here are some choices of books I'm going to try out:

The Cold King
Storm
The Shadow of the Wind
Storm Front

message 178: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I have never heard of widget the world watcher. I'm guessing that wasn't in the US? My first thought when I read your comment, Rusalka, was... what on earth does the one eyed, one horned, flying, purple people eater have to do with a widget on the home page? LOL
Does anyone remember that alien?

message 179: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Do I ever! And now that is stuck in my head for the rest of the day...

Some good choices there Ronyell!

message 181: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments I spent a lot of time looking through my collection for books that would fit. It was hard to remember to leave out those seasons. Then I realized that a new release I had on hold at the library would work: Dead Heat.

Thanks! I also remembered Widget the World Watcher! Too bad that series is not that well known.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Cherie, did I see you were thinking of Cloudstreet? Or have you already read it? Either way, it's what i've picked up as I have been meaning to read it FOREVER. Apparently it's the "best Aussie book ever". I am half expecting it to fail on that one, but we will see. Let me know, so I can pick your brain.

No, I have not read it yet. I considered it, but I was looking for something I already had on hand. Lisa mentioned it and I was responding to her post before I started being so punny. I saw that you were reading it. :0)

I read This Country of Gale-Force Winds. I could get points for poetry, female author, and title in yellow, but it does not qualify because it is only 104 pages. The poems were ok, but only two or three that I really liked and, then only parts of. None really to do with weather, except a line or two. I gave Drizzle to Amy.

message 185: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Oh fair enough. I looked back through but couldn't see.

Sorry, I decided to put in a page requirement this time :(

No worries.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments @ Rusalka - I just requested a copy of Cloudstreet from my library. I should have it in a day or two. There were no previous holds but I could not find it on the shelf. I started the book that I had originally picked, but I am not in the mood for it. It is pretty dry and only offers up 6 points for the challenge. I will read it someday, just not now. I found another title that I alredy own, but again, not enough pages (although more than the poetry one). Looks like a good story too. Night of the Twisters.

Edit:
I know that Cloudstreet fits the challenge, but good grief, only 3 points and that is for the # of pages. Are you hoping for bonus points 'cuz the glue stick looks like it has already been taken (I can hardly say earned)?

message 188: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I don't look at points myself. I just read what i wish. But yes, you will get some bonus points in this one.

ROFL! I saw what you asked Liz.

I wasn't worried about the points, but I love the "challenge" of finding a book that fits as many of the point catagories as possible. Bonus points are always a plus but it is hard to sort for them. I read what I wish too, within the theme. You never know what is out there until you start gophering. ☺

message 190: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments It is very true. I am sure if I had something on the shelf that got me more points I would be drawn to it if I realised. Maybe I'm just too blinkered.

message 191: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments I am listening to Snow Falling on Cedars. I remember starting it years ago and putting in on hold. The reason why comes back now.... This story dragssssss... I have to put bookmarks all the time so i know where to return to when i realize i have stopped paying attention....

message 192: by Cherie (new)

message 194: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I have also looked at Cloudstreet. I downloaded the Kindle sample and it looks pretty good. Would anyone be interested in a buddy read starting almost immediately?

message 195: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I would happily discuss it. I just finished it. And I believe Lisa was going to read it too.

message 196: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I just got an email notice and I am on my way to the library to pick up the copy of Cloudstreet I requested. You finished already, Rusalka? Way to go! (I'm too engrosed in the 2nd Tomorrow series book. I haven't touched my other books in a couple of days.)

Casceil - if you want to start a thread, I will join you as soon as I start. I will be flipping back and forth with The House at Riverton and The Dead of Night until the end of the month. I do not seem to be able to get as much read this last month. Everything I pick up is almost a chunkster and work has been crazy. I am buried up to my eyebrows.

message 197: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Cherie, I will go start a thread, but I'm not sure how fast I'll be reading it, since I'm juggling other books, too.

message 198: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments I need to know the secret, how do you guys read more than one book at a time? I just can't do it, I'm a pretty speedy reader so I really don't need to, but I get confused. I can't even listen to an audio and be reading a paper book at the same time.

I read one audiobook and one print book. I listen for a couple hours after I finish work or whenever I'm in the car. I read print when I crawl into bed.

I don't have trouble switching between the two. We don't have problems switching between tv programs, and this is really no different.

message 200: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Berit, it's an acquired skill. In my job it's not unusual to have to stop doing one thing and do something else immediately. Years ago I remember a day when I was doing five things at once, all some decree of urgent. I had this big pile on my desk of task 5 on top of task 4 on top of task 3 on top of task 2 on top of task 1. You just learn to focus on whatever is in front you at the moment. It can be a challenge, particularly if any of the books are at all similar to something else you're reading. And usually one book turns out to be more gripping than the others, so it gets finished first.
