SOLVED. Adult Dark Fantasy of adventurers confronting new evil

I read this book between 2010 and 2015. I remember the POV switched between the male leader of a group of adventurers/mercs and a woman in another setting. The male leader visits a bath house at the start of the book and is shown as gay, or at least bi, in his interactions. The woman is being spied on and a force/power of some kind invades her body and she is a new threat.

There are a lot of gory and grim details and it has a very "end of the world" feeling, but I think it led into a series.

Well, color me dumb or lucky, but I JUST found it on the third page of this Grimdark Books list here on Goodreads. It was "The Barrow" by Mark Smylie.
