NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11083 comments My brother is in town, and he's following the January 6 hearings. We intended to watch CNN for a short time today, but it's really interesting. This could be addictive. Watergate was nothing compared to January 6. I'm hoping there will be a book about this later with the impact of All the President's Men. I'm looking forward to hearing the whole story without all the repetition and chitchat.

Peacejanz | 1015 comments I agree. I only have 24 hours each day and I fall asleep some of that. Surely, we will get a valuable book. peace, janz

Sue | 2723 comments Nancy - I know what you mean. It's fascinating and awful both at once. Reminds me of the old curse/blessing "May you live in interesting times."

message 4: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12931 comments I haven’t missed a shred of testimony!! Mind blowing! And I agree, it’s addictive!

message 5: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5760 comments I have recorded them so I don't have to miss any. I usually record on MSNBC because I like the commentators but all the main networks are covering it. Well, maybe not a certain one.

The committee got professional TV people to help them put together the programs and it shows, the way everything is clearly laid out, they switch between live interviews, summaries and film, etc.

Holly R W | 3120 comments I've been watching all of the hearings, also. We came so close to having our democracy ripped apart.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments Hubby and I are glued to MSNBC. We watch the live hearings in the afternoon and the commentaries all evening. Riveting!

Amy | 12931 comments I have been waiting for them to blow the lid off of the relationship between the oath keepers and the proud boys and the White House. I just saw on CNN but it might’ve been international CNN, that they were interviewing that X Oathkeeper Jason some more, and he spoke of knowledge that this relationship had been brewing even before the election, the idea of using the militia if the election didn’t turn out the way they wanted. And of course Roger Stone having these guys be his security. I’m still worried though about the people who need the most to be hearing this stuff and for whom it is in reaching because their fake news doesn’t allow them to see it. But this one was bombshell after bombshell. I know people say that they might not do anything about it, but it doesn’t seem to me to be possible that anyone wouldn’t prosecute and indict. I am though, worried about what will happen in these next elections. Because we have an oath keeper running against Liz Cheney, and she will win! We have other such folks running as well. I’m really sad that Liz Cheney had to sacrifice her political career, to perform such an important service for our country. The idea that she would lose against an oath keeper kills me. I do think they’re gonna do something about it, I’m just afraid that There won’t be the reverberations that they need

message 9: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5760 comments Women are the ones with "cojones" as usual - Liz Cheney, Cassidy Hutchinson and other young staffers. You know they must be getting vile threats on all social media, people coming to their homes, etc.

message 10: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11083 comments I was thinking that if Liz Cheney ran for president, I'd vote for her. Of course, the endorsement of liberals like me wouldn't help her much with her own party.

message 11: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15555 comments I so don't agree with Liz Cheney's politics, but the woman is a true patriot, a hero, and a role model.

I almost can't believe I am writing that and believe it.

This really makes Watergate look like Romper Room. As a friend says, Nixon pratically looks like a patriot in comparison.

This is a masterful building of a case. So many are impatient, thinking tgere us enough for the Justice Department to act. The last thing needed is to rush the fences. What is happening too is the building of cases against Meadows and others of the inner circle which will in turn, I expect, bring home the indictment, drive the last nail into the coffin, for Trump.

message 12: by Sallys (new)

Sallys | 694 comments I have been watching when I can. It is terrifying. The only thing that makes me feel a tiny bit better is the elegance and patriotism of all members of Congress pursuing these criminals. I fear that we will never get rid of them but perhaps a good scare will keep them in check. I don't know.

message 13: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11083 comments You'd think. There were so many other things that would have finished Trump, but he's the true "Teflon Don."

message 14: by Peacejanz (new)

Peacejanz | 1015 comments An old saying that I am depending on:

Water constantly dripping will erode stone.

Peace, janz

message 15: by Robin P (last edited Jul 13, 2022 05:52PM) (new)

Robin P | 5760 comments My concern is that the makeup of Congress will change this fall and everything will be squelched, or a new investigation started of the other party for no good reason. So this committee better hurry up.

message 16: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12931 comments Frightening that Ron DeSantis is now amassing money for his presidential run. And with Trump finished, he’s the guy! Our family friend are mega donors of his. I woke up frightened. Meanwhile, CNN made me so angry this morning! I was doubly pissed. Their incorrect spin on what is happening in Israel is what made many Jews (including my parents) believe and trust Fox News as the true news and CNN as fake. This is why we are Independents. Heavily leaning Democrat. But in our minds, Biden’s administration is in the exact right frame of mind. And the Democrats continual assault on him leaves the door wide open for MAGA. I am so upset with our party’s unwillingness to support him. I blame AOC and the Squad for pushing people to Fox. My parents are still New York Democrats. Dino’s if you will. Poor taste CNN!

message 17: by Robin P (last edited Jul 15, 2022 07:07AM) (new)

Robin P | 5760 comments Democrats have had an unfortunate tendency to turn on their own for years. All those Democrats who didn't like Hilary and voted for 3rd parties or not at all in 2016 gave us this Supreme Court, as well as the worst president in history. I am very left wing and I have understood for a long time that it's not about my personal preference. Carter, Clinton and Biden weren't my first choices but I knew I had to support them. My brother in heavily liberal NYC can be a purist and vote for a Socialist but most of us can't. I also blame Nader and the people who voted for him for the 2000 debacle. Other countries are amazed at our two-party system and how it is practically designed to be nonfunctional and non representative.

message 18: by Holly R W (last edited Jul 14, 2022 05:10PM) (new)

Holly R W | 3120 comments As a tangent to what you're saying Robin, I've begun to wonder if we need a parliamentary system with several parties. The two parties we have are locked in gridlock (to put it mildly). Rarely, do they break out of party lines to work cooperatively with each other. The situation gets worse with each passing year.

message 19: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11697 comments Technically in Canada, we have more than two parties, but for the most part it still comes down to two parties - one centrist party and one right-wing who tend to go back and forth in power.

So, similarly, they rarely work together.

What I'd like to see is proportional representation, so that (like Robin mentioned above), me - as quite a left-leaning person, I would feel like my vote would count for something if I thought I could vote where I really wanted rather than voting strategically to keep someone I really don't want out of power.

That being said, with more than two parties, when I know I don't have a hope even voting strategically, I do sometimes "get" to vote where I really want to, but it doesn't mean anything, in the end. Not without proportional representation.

message 20: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12931 comments Such an Interesting discussion! Thank you for starting it Nancy! But here the lid got completely blown off its hinges at this seventh hearing, and most republicans seem to not even know it’s contents. They names like ten congresspeople who attended the meeting. What becomes of that? LC’s laserlike focus on Trump, does this dismiss the role of Jim Jordan and Scott Perry? And when do we really get to investigate Gianni Thomas? Do Rudy and Sydney get off Scott-free?
