Katie (katiew892) What are your hopes for this book? Any prior experience with Hemingway?

Ridgetop01 | 8 comments I read this particular book long ago, and liked it. Enjoying it again, with new appreciation. I need to read other Hemingway, though, as haven't read anything by him and I'm wary of his reputation as a "macho" writer, need to see if that's true. His style is sparse and to the point in this book, which is refreshing.

Ridgetop01 | 8 comments Ok - according to shmoop.com Hemingway said about this book "It is the best I can write, ever." Anyone have any thoughts about the validity of this? I enjoyed the book. The old man fought to the end, I believe because he wanted to still believe he was strong and capable. In the end, he seems to finally have accepted that perhaps it is time to value relationships over his manhood, that perhaps he is defeated in proving that anymore.
