Written in the middle of the XX century (possibly fifties? early sixties?), the book opens with the middle-aged heroine burying the person she was stranded with. The author is definitely a woman.

I read it a couple of years ago, but it's definitely an old novel, from the middle of the century (post WW2, I'd say).The heroine is middle-aged, definitely not in her twenties. The novel starts on the island (the main plot is her getting back to England and not liking it that much), but i don't remember how she got there.
The book I had was generic cloth-bound blue without the dust cover.
British literary fiction, definitely by a woman.

Yes, both are visible.It's kind of long, but you might want to have a look at the Books Set on Islands list.
