SOLVED. Gothic Mystery, Womans father commits suicide, she breaks engagement [s]

I believe this book was published in the 1970s or 80s. It is a Victoria Holt- style (but not actually by her) Gothic Mystery (slight romance). Set in early 1900, maybe 1800. A woman (in her early 20s?) lives alone with her father; he commits suicide due to police claims that he was a theif. She was engaged to a man who worked with police but she broke off the engagement because she felt he was responsible for her father's suicide. She goes to stay with a distant relative (great aunt?) And is trying to discover some mystery within that home. Her ex- fiancé somehow ends up staying there for a visit as well. She has a cousin who is a few years older and married, but it is believed that she(the cousin) is unable to have children. The cousin and husband are also staying in the home.

Melanie, did the father's suicide tie into the mystery at the aunt's home?

Do you remember if the mystery was related to murder, thief, kidnapping, etc?

I don't think the father's suicide tied into the mystery.

I do believe the mystery was murder. I remember the girl traveling to a near by cottage that seemed to be falling apart, I think to investigate. They traveled by small boat occasionally; a little row boat.

It was a standalone novel.

I really don't remember the cover.
