At the end, he is now a young man still hunting ex Nazi soldiers and he and his father are in a car the son is driving, apparently his father figures out that he himself (also a former Nazi) is the next to be killed but can’t get out because of the speed in which his son is driving.

My husband read this in the late 1970’s. I’m the reader in our family, he’s not. Yet he thinks about it still after all these years later (we’re both 63.).

Who was the boy in his past life? Where does he live?

Is he certain that it was a boy and not a girl? I found Death Knell which sounds similar apart from the gender.
