I thought superlibrarians could move ISBNs still, but that it was impossible to merge the most popular edition? (Not that it matters if it can be done one way or another!)

The most popular edition can be merged, but it cannot be separated. You have to separate the other editions away, leaving the popular edition and the edition you want to merge with it.
