Annie O'Brien | 18 comments I'm enjoying this book. I've had 3 vacations in Maine so this brings back a lot of memories like how freezing cold the water is and we were at lakes. My last vacation was in August and the temp. never went above 70 so too cold to go swimming but it sure was a beautiful place - a lake surrounded by tall pine tree woods. A lot going on in this book so it is keeping my interest a bit at a time.

Melinda | 45 comments I enjoyed this instalment of the Penderwicks. There seemed to be more adult supervision which is more realistic. However Skye annoyed me in this book. She was so over protective of Jane who is only 1 year younger. Her dismissal of Jane’s wanting to write about love and Betty’s wanting to play the piano was not very sisterly at all. I’m glad Batty showed everyone that she was good at playing for only just learning. The author’s depiction of Jeffrey’s anger at the world when he found out about Alec was perfect. I met my birth father at 12 for the first time and I remember wanting to be left alone. I’m so happy that Jeffrey welcomed him into his life by the end of the book. I was hoping Aunt Claire and Turron became a couple, this would keep Jeffrey in the “family” forever with Turron and Alec being best friends. I missed Ben though. 4/5 stars for this one. Next month, next book.

I like your review. I don't know if I like the whole system of OAP. My mother was always telling me to look after the younger ones but being a child myself and easily distracted I didn't always. If one of them ever got hurt I would've felt guilty also. It is a lot of pressure to put on a kid. It did get annoying but I can kind of understand it. So when the neighbors get involved I could enjoy the book more as now there are other adults taking care of things.

Elizabeth Meadows (lizziefaye) | 424 comments I had forgotten so much of this book. It was like reading it again for the first time. I hadn't really thought too much about the OAP concept until you all pointed it out. True that it does seem like a lot to put on a kid. I think that Mr. Penderwick probably instigated it out of necessity though since his wife died soon after Batty's birth and he really needed to rely on the older girls to help out. Skye did go a little over board with it though.
Melinda, I don't know if you've started the next book yet, but I'm excited that you will get your wish. You'll see in Chapter one what I'm talking about.
It does seem strange that they were so positive that no Penderwick had any musical ability. The older girls all have something that they excel at, so why wouldn't they give Batty some room to explore some things without wanting to shut her down so quickly.
When I was single, I used to live in an apartment building that backed up to a golf course. Money was always tight. I'm wishing now that I had gone searching for golf balls to make a little extra cash. LOL!
