Post your thoughts here as we read!

I know the plot of Pride and Prejudice is very well known, but as some people reading this for the first time might not know the details of the plot, do please avoid spoilers if you're rereading or reading ahead of schedule. There is a separate spoilery thread for those of us rereading.

Likewise if you're behind the schedule, maybe avoid the board in case of spoilers.

Kailey (Luminous Libro) (luminouslibro) | 4 comments I’m listening to an audiobook of P&P narrated by Kate Beckinsale! It’s wonderful!

Insa | 3 comments Hey, I’m reading P&P probably for the tenth time but just noticed how Austen gives you no details about people‘s look and least not so far. I know there will at least be freckles coming. For now, they are tall and handsome or pretty etc but no hair colour, nothing. So we can just imagine Colin Firth if we want to 😁.

message 4: by Liz (new) - rated it 5 stars

Liz Little | 55 comments I love the comedy that Jane adds to her stories. The line in chapter 4 where Elizabeth is talking to Jane about Bingley that says "You have liked many a stupider person", made me laugh.

Anastasia (anastasia_oz) | 14 comments I constantly find myself giggling while reading this book, which I really like! 🤓

Marina | 3 comments I am reading this novel for the second time, the first being many, many years ago when I only gave it two stars, having been put off by literature at school. I am enjoying it immensely so far, particularly the way Austin shows us the complete lack of self awareness that some of her characters have. I am also finding myself interested in the dynamics of the relationship between Mr and Mrs Bennett.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 72 comments You’ve hit on a big theme in Austen’s novels, Marina: underpinning her comedy, what makes it ring true, is a focus on what we as individuals owe to one another in community. That lack of self-awareness is a sign of a person not thinking about others—people so caught up in their own wishes and egos that they run roughshod over others. I think in Austen’s mind that’s one of the biggest sins a person can commit.

Marissa | 17 comments I am surprised how little I’ve been spoiled for this novel considering this is my first read. Reading the beginning of the book I’m realizing I had no idea what the setup for the story was. I’m enjoying the fact that everyone is accusing everyone else of having too much pride as soon as they’re out of earshot. I’m hoping the humourous social commentary continues, that’s been my favourite part of Austen’s other works.

Alice (aliceandthegiantbookshelf) | 8 comments This is my first time with the book. Enjoying the chapters so far, it’s weird reading a book where I feel like I know exactly where all the characters are going but not knowing how they started out!

Marilyn Maya (mayaswords) | 22 comments I'm behind but I'm reading slowly to get the full enjoyment. I have read four chapters and I'm really digging the father's sarcasm. Oh, Mr. Darcy, you were proud at the dance! Aloha Maya AKA the baby boomer booktuber

Isn't it wonderful!

Yes, I loved that!

Judith | 5 comments I haven't read Pride and Prejudice in a long while and I almost forgot how much I love it. The story and the characters just make me so happy!

Marissa | 17 comments I really don’t trust Mr. Wickham haha… he seems too well prepared to bash Mr. Darcy to Lizzy when he barely knows her. His story is believable but seems suspiciously calculated to win her affection. I’m excited to find out whether what he said is the truth!

Marilyn Maya (mayaswords) | 22 comments I was a bit lost at why Mrs. Bennet was so abused by the Bingham sisters. Even Elizabeth was ashamed. IMHO she didn't do much to deserve the insults

Hannah Watson | 19 comments I’ve really missed reading Pride and Prejudice! I’m loving the wit and dry humour 😀

Hi Marilyn! Mr. Bennett is pretty sarcastic!

Ahhhhh Wickham!! He did indulge in some massive over-sharing with a virtual stranger!!

Misa (manglitter) | 3 comments I don't know if I will be able to stop reading.

Liz Little | 55 comments I think Lizzy is right about Caroline. She wants her brother Mr. Bingley to marry Miss Darcy so she can have more money when she is old.

message 21: by Liz (new) - rated it 5 stars

Liz Little | 55 comments I love the line in Chapter 20 when Mrs. Bennet says "Not that I have much pleasure in talking to anybody." This is toward the end after Mr. Collins proposed to Elizabeth and she refused. Mrs. Bennet was not going to talk to her anymore. So comical when all she does is talk to everyone.

Anastasia (anastasia_oz) | 14 comments Misa wrote: "I don't know if I will be able to stop reading."

I couldn't! I finished reading Volume I yesterday, in line with our schedule, and was so pumped that I did not go to bed until I finished the whole book...🙈 Needless to say, I did not sleep much tonight 😅

Alice (aliceandthegiantbookshelf) | 8 comments I’m starting to feel more invested in events now. Could easily carry on reading today if it wasn’t for the fact I have other buddy reads on the go.

I am very interested in their dynamic. He is aware of her limitations but seems to enjoy being her husband.

Hi Alice, I stayed up until 3 am reading P&P last night. It just gets more delightful as it goes on. Hugs and Aloha.

Ha ha. I feel that way every time! Even though I read it maybe once a year or so, it still feels fresh and new. To quote Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) from the movie "You've Got Mail" "“Confession: I have read Pride and Prejudice two hundred times. I get lost in the language, words like: Thither. Mischance. Felicity. I am always in agony over whether Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are really going to get together. Read it! I know you’ll love it.”

Hannah Watson | 19 comments I love books that’s just pull you in!

Marilyn Maya (mayaswords) | 22 comments I'm almost finished. I can't help myself either. It is so wonderful and I'm catching things I missed many years ago. Jane Austen was a spectacular character developer.

Rainey | 6 comments Hi all! Sorry I’m just now checking in but I wanted you to know I am reading and I’m loving it! I’m actually reading it physically this time around so I’m sticking with the schedule.

Janet (borninabook) | 3 comments Ch 18 At the Netherfield ball, when Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are dancing and they’re trying to come up with conversation…Darcy says “What think you of books?” 5⭐️ sir!! Well played. I’m only sad to read that Elizabeth didn’t take the opportunity to discuss books. Would’ve loved to read that conversation. 🥲

Marissa | 17 comments I got so confused about the Mr. Darcy’s first name is Fitzwilliam and that it is his cousin’s last name. I thought they were both named Fitzwilliam Darcy for a minute. I understand the historical context of it now (naming a son his Mother’s maiden name) but I also feel a bit silly haha.

QNPoohBear | 304 comments Marissa wrote: "I got so confused about the Mr. Darcy’s first name is Fitzwilliam and that it is his cousin’s last name. I thought they were both named Fitzwilliam Darcy for a minute. I understand the historical c..."

The implication is Lady Anne brought the illustrious Fitzwilliam name. Perhaps descendants of William the Conqueror and old Mr. Darcy is probably also Norman - D'Arcy but lacks the title. Thus their only son combines both names Fitzwilliam Darcy. We don't know what Colonel Fitzwilliam's first name is or what his father's title is other than Earl of___.

Marissa | 17 comments Oh interesting! I’m not very knowledgeable in honorifics/peerage/names but that makes sense.

Marissa | 17 comments This part of the novel is reminding me a lot of a certain part of Mansfield Park (my favourite JA novel so far) haha. I don’t want to say why as to avoid spoiling the other book.

Love that image - thank you!! Another huge Kathleen Kelly fan here. Watch them once a year almost too!!
