SciFi book I read in maybe 1982. It was about a group of people exploring an abandoned planet. They had a robot guide who may or may not have always been on the planet.

A bit of a long shot but could it be Cemetery World? There's an abandoned earth and a robot, and not many people. I don't remember much more!

When were you in middle school, and did it seem like a new or oldish book at the time? I recently read Ashar of Qarius by Clare Cooper which was published in 1990 and has some similar features (and is also a good read!).
