Karin | 799 comments It's partly fixed--now there is only one thread here that I am seeing far too many "new" for.

Nope. I'm seeing "201 new" under Biography, Autobiography, and Memoir read in 2023."

Click on it and then go back out and it will change that. I had only one left like that and that worked for me.

Mike (mikechr) | 110 comments I recently read a book about books (Portable Magic: A History of Books and Their Readers) and a memoir about life in the publishing business (Turning Pages: The Adventures and Misadventures of a Publisher). This caused me to reflect on my own relationship with books. I recorded those reflections in my blog:

hmm put my name down to request Britney's memoir. I've read Spare, not that impressed.
Maggie Smith - the actress?
Beth Moore is??
Pageboy Page Elliot, is he trans? Wasn't he the actor who once played Juno in the movie about teen pregnancy?

I wasn't that impressed with Spare, either and didn't even vote in that category.

Yes and Yes.

Each of the nonfiction categories only had 1 book that I had read, so that's what I voted for, even though none of them were 5 star books for me.

I voted for:

All Knotted Up Life-memoir and autobiography
A Fever In The Heartland-history
Being Henry-humor

The nonfiction category didn't have anything I had read so I didn't vote in that category.

message 109: by Selina (last edited Nov 29, 2023 07:52PM) (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments I haven't read any of the books except Spare.
Not voting for that one!
I didn't know there is now a category called Romantasy.

All the books seem to be American, so the non-fiction doesn't appeal much to me nor the history. I do read some American history, but can't always relate to it. I've heard some things about 'On our best Behavior' so might give that one a go.

There doesn't seem to be any children's categories anymore.

I wonder who decides which books get nominated. Is it just how many people on GR have that book on their shelf?

message 111: by Karin (last edited Dec 01, 2023 01:12PM) (new)

Karin | 799 comments I also wonder how they are chosen and why it's so heavy on American books, although not all are because at least one of the romance novels is by a British writer.

One thing I didn't like is in many of them I don't want to vote, but in one there are two books I gave 5 stars to and I give a very small percentage of books that many.

Just to let everyone know, I haven't been around much the last few days. I have the flu. Hopefully will be better soon, as I have a lot to do for the holidays. I have company coming on Friday, staying until Sunday so I probably won't be around much this next week.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Ok It's The Woman in Me by Britney Spears

I do recall when it was rumoured Prince Harry and Britney would make a good couple. I just can't imagine that happening though. I wonder if anyone else spends time celeb match-making. I don't think its a surprise that Harry married an American actress.

I recall reading Britney's mother's memoir and how it was in the Christian bookshop. Through The Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World
I don't know if her dad now will write one. Amy Winehouse didn't have time to write her own, but her dad did.

Thank you! I am feeling much better. Now my husband has it but he had to go to work. He called in and they told him there was no one to replace him. I feel bad for him. I didn't even feel like I could stand up and he has to drive a truck all day.

I would imagine that if you grow up with Christmas in the summer it's normal for you even though it seems strange to those of us in northern climates.

I'm glad you're feeling better. I hope your husband gets better soon. That he has to go in even when he is ill is so tough! For himself but also in a job like driving a truck it could even cause road accidents! I read The Best Australian Trucking Stories a few years ago and it gave me more insight, respect and empathy for the people driving trucks whereas previously they passed me by and I had no thoughts at all about them. During times like covid and the holidays you can really appreciate how vital they are in the supply chain so that we can all have conveniences and what we want.

So many people seem to be getting sick! Take care everybody!

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Boxing Day! Is it true Americans don't have Boxing day? We have Boxing day sales, its kinda like 'Black Friday' but in reverse. We spend all our Christmas bonuses, and swap gifts with people who aren't our family.

12 days of Christmas start from 25th December and end on January 6th, which is the day everyone else celebrates Jesus birth. (Epiphany) or if you Jewish, its Hanukkah. Jesus was Jewish anyway.

We don't have Boxing Day, but the stores are very busy the first few days after Christmas with people returning things and spending their gift cards.

So excited! Patty Wetterling, the mother of Jacob Wetterling and author of the book I am currently reading, Dear Jacob: A Mother's Journey of Hope, is going to be speaking at our local library in May! They live close to my husband's hometown and everyone in Minnesota knows the name of Jacob Wetterling, who was kidnapped and murdered when he was 11 and missing for over 25 years and his remains were finally found in 2016. Patty never gave up hope until they knew for sure that he was dead. She has become an advocate for missing children.

Good point! As soon as I decide I want to buy a book (or get it from the library) I quit reading the sample because I know I'll end up reading it again when I get the book.

Generally when I buy a Kindle book it picks up where I left off in the sample. That didn't happen with my current book, however.

Pretty sure the book It Takes a Worried Man is the first time I've seen the word 'padiddle' in a book! As in...I've been driving around with a padiddle...

When I was a teenager driving around with friends, if we saw a padiddle we were suppose to hit the person sitting next to us.

This must be a regional term because I had to look this word up to see what it meant and my spell checker has red squiggly lines underneath it, so no wonder this is the first time :)

I've seen some talk in another group where they think Amazon is neglecting this site. Those of us who used to be on Shelfari know that that's what happened when Amazon bought it just to shut it down. I think that Amazon is not going to spend money on a site if they think it isn't selling books. So if you are going to buy a book, click on the links here that take you to Amazon to buy it. That way they will know you bought the book (or at least looked at it) because of this site.

After I posted here my husband and I were out after dark. We saw a car with only one headlight and he called it half a diddler. If he's used this in the past, I can't remember, but the diddle root is the same.

I wish I did! It gets harder as they get older, doesn't it? I prefer to tailor things to the person so have nothing. My husband and I are each getting music CDs for my son we know he likes now that he had an old car of his own, not even classical, either (he loves classical music and it's the bulk of what he plays.) We do talk about some stuff, but both like to shop and shop better apart :)

It's a 2007 Honda Civic that still has a working CD player.

My van has one, but sometimes it doesn't like to eject the CD for some time after a long reboot with the van off. I didn't use it for a long time and it appeared to be all better for a couple of CDS, but went back to its old tricks so I don't use it often.
