Focus on Reading - Week 46 - Location Vacation

I hate summer travel. I hate hot weather. Let me stay on my couch infront of A/C.

I will take my reading to San Francisco on an upcoming trip (where it is cool in the summer).

My reading this summer will take me to a few alternative histories including Steampunk Cairo. I also will during Christmas in July head to cold weather locales. There are some space and fantasy locations coming up. Oh and Joyce's Dublin.

In three weeks time I will take my reading to the US, my first travel abroad since covid, yay! We have rented a lovely house/villa in California, and we are four families traveling together. We’re super excited. We have booked a trip to Universal Studios and Las Vegas as well :) It will be super expensive, but we’re telling ourselves it’s worth it having spent the two last summer only vacationing in our own country.

Mostly I will be reading at home, or listening while on drives.

Since it’s Matariki (the Māori New Year, when the Pleiades star cluster rises - a time for remembrance, reflection and looking ahead), I finally want to get around to a couple of books that I have by Māori authors: ‘Auē’ by Becky Manawatu, and ‘Kurangaituku’ by Whiti Hereaka.

As for books, it seems that I'm smack up against the 'Goldilocks question'/predicament in finding a satisfying book. Every summer, I struggle to find a book that is not too heavy and not too light, but is 'just right'.

Hilde, I live in Southern California. I hope your vacation stay is near the coast. I live an hour and a half inland. Yesterday our high temperature was close to 38c. And of course you know that Vegas will be scorching. ( Not that most people spend much time outdoors in Vegas) Bring your sunscreen! I hope you have a wonderful time.

But in truth I will have to rely on my air conditioner as I am staying home this summer and will only be traveling vicariously.

- I think in my house and places in my country.
Where will you take your reading this summer?
- Easy! We are going on a family trip vacation and we're going to travel to the popular destinations in our country. We're going to "The Island Garden City of Samal", "Cloud 9" and "Davao". Also, I search for Hotels in those places and the Hotels seem amazing.

I was set to spend a month in Massachusetts but decided to stay behind while the family went ahead so I could watch over my aging/ailing 13 year old dog, King. Being by myself (and dog) for a month hasn't happened since I was in my 20's so I am expecting I may get thru a lot of reading.

Since my now-19-year old cat was diagnosed with kidney disease just over three years ago, I haven't left overnight (except two weekends ago, when I really didn't have a choice due to a kidney stone - was in hospital for two nights waiting on surgery, and one additional night post-surgery).
But it's only me. He has a lot of meds and I would be so upset if he died and I wasn't there. I should be there with him.
Now, when he was diagnosed and in hospital for a few days 3 years ago, he was in such bad shape, I had no idea he'd still be doing well this much time later!

I'm pushing my husband to meet our boys and his sister on the island where he grew up. I'll stay home with mom. I'm not a beach person anymore, but they'll have fun fishing, swimming and eating fresh lobster.
I will need to get a new passport soon. I don't think I can even go to Canada with my (non-enhanced) driver's license.

Not planning any summer getaways. For the past 30 years Hubby and I have chosen to vacation in the fall or winter, when most kids are in school and we have a quieter atmosphere at most destinations. The farthest I'll be taking my books is down to the southwest side of the county when I visit my favorite Mexican restaurant (I live on the far northeast side) for lunch. I usually go alone and read my book while sipping my margarita.
As for where the books will take me ... current reads and plan to reads
Boston
Northern England
Australia (Sydney)
Texas
New York
Ireland
Montana

Excellent, I am sure we will be like kids again ;)

@Hilde, your vacation plans sound lovely. Enjoy!"
Thank you, I will :)

Ah, Jgrace, that is my biggest worry. I am no good with temperatures as high as that, in fact I get uncomfortable when it hits higher than 24-25c. Luckily the house comes with a big pool, and we're relatively close to the coast. In LV I plan to follow Theresa's plan, and stay close to the AC at all times ;) I also burn easy, so I will probably stay pink the whole time, lol. Lots of sunscreens are coming with.
