Sam goes to Sarasota to meet with Mary Lou who hasn’t answered his calls in three weeks nor returned the signed divorce papers. When he arrives at her house, he finds a badly decomposed body in the kitchen who looks like Mary Lou. Were you convinced at the time it was her? What did you think happened to Hayley?

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3501 comments I thought it was Mary Lou and expected Sam to find her dead too or that someone kidnapped her. I felt better about the second option because Sam would find her. If Hayley were dead, that would do Sam in.

I was 99% certain it was Mary Lou. Funny how this was a reread and I still thought so! But, I refused to believe that Hayley was dead. I figured she was with Nadine or had been kidnapped.

Robin (robinmy) | 2466 comments Yes, the first time I read this book I was certain that Mary Lou was dead and someone had kidnapped Hayley.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1812 comments I had my doubts that it was Mary Lou. I suspected it was Janine, especially once it became clear that Hayley was gone too.

I couldn't see a scenario in which Smarmy Bob from the previous book would kidnap Hayley - why? Ransom? Leverage? Neither of these made sense based on the fact that he's a terrorist. His target was Mary Lou and he wanted her silenced so he would have either killed Hayley or left her there (she's a toddler who can't identify him).

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments This is one of my favorite books in the series so I remember it well, Even the second time around when Sam find the dead woman and believes it is Mary Lou, I felt his gut wrenching reaction and panic about Hailey.

Like Robin on my first reading I thought it was Mary Lou dead and Hailey had been kidnapped.
