MIP | 3 comments Ive been trying to find this book for a very long time and I can remember everything about it but no matter what I search I cannot find it. I read this book in 2019, the book is about these grouos of people that left earth due to an ice age and now circle the earth. The main character is this 18 year old girl who lives on a poorer farming ship and works as a teacher and a machanic. She once lived on a more luxerouse ship before a disease swept through one of the ships and the farmers needed more workers so her aunt wanting to seem heroic sent her away as a sort of charity case to the cause. She became a teacher due to her higher level of previous education and even though she loved her students she was looking for somethung more. So she applied to become a private teacher and gets accepted by this private ship closer to the moon. She says goodbye to her friends, confessing her love to one only to be rejected, and leaves for the smaller ship. She finds that she must teach this younger girl who has been trouble for her previous teachers. The one who hired her is the girls older brother, he is considered a sort of prince amongst higher society, she ends up falling in love with him as she learns more about his love for books (paper books are very rare but he has many preserved in a small library in the ship) and his caring heart. However theres creepy stuff happening on the ship, every night she seems to hear laughter or footsteps outskde her door, and this cat that her love intrest owns even freaks out in the middle of the night. She puts this off as her own worry of being on a new ship, but is one night awoken by an alarm warning of an active fire on the ship in the captains room. She runs to his room and saves him along with his favorite book just before the room is sealed and dangerously extinguished. Later we find out that the footsteps and the fire were caused by the guys mother who was assumed dead, but it turns out he was just keeping her in a different part of the ship trying to helo her mentally as she beleived he was her husband and keot hurting others that got too close to him. I dont remember what happens to the mom. Later we find out that her love intrest is actually engaged, during a party where his fiancé is over he admits that he is not in love with her and breaks the engagement, causeing some more conflicts. At this point the book gets fuzzy, I remember that something happens to make the younger sister of the captain go to earth, so the main character with the brother follow her and find that earth is once again habitable, I think thats where it ends

Angela | 625 comments You're welcome! :D I recognized it as a Jane Eyre retelling from your description, and that put me on the right track. There are only a few "Jane Eyre in space" books out there, haha. :)
