Unfortunately all i can really remember about this book is the vauge "vibe," but I really loved it so if I can find it id love to do so. I read this when i was in 3rd grade (2012 or 2013). It was a big book. If you know the book Mastiff by Tamora Pierce i think it was about that size. I think the cover was blue. I could also be wrong about all of this cause I was 7 or 8. I know there were definitely other books in the series that had the same vibe, but had nothing to do with one another (except possible being in the same world). This one was based primarily underwater while another in the series was on land (somewhere rocky cause there were cliffs). Definitely fantasy. Not a children's book, but definitely appropriate for kids. The whole being sucked down a whirlpool thing was a really big deal in the book. It had alot of words dedicated to it and its what has stuck with me.

Maybe? I'd have to read it to find out. I do think the book was longer than 160 pages tho, since I was scared of long books as a kid and that one of the reasons I was given this one.
Here's the Google Books preview of The Lampfish of Twill by Janet Taylor Lisle - Rainbowheart's suggestion:
