Thief of Shadows (Maiden Lane, #4) by Elizabeth Hoyt
Thief of Shadows by Elizabeth Hoyt

A MASKED MAN...

Winter Makepeace lives a double life. By day he's the stoic headmaster of a home for foundling children. But the night brings out a darker side of Winter. As the moon rises, so does the Ghost of St. Giles-protector, judge, fugitive. When the Ghost, beaten and wounded, is rescued by a beautiful aristocrat, Winter has no idea that his two worlds are about to collide.

A DANGEROUS WOMAN....

Lady Isabel Beckinhall enjoys nothing more than a challenge. Yet when she's asked to tutor the Home's dour manager in the ways of society-flirtation, double-entendres, and scandalous liaisons-Isabel can't help wondering why his eyes seem so familiar-and his lips so tempting.

A PASSION NEITHER COULD DENY....

During the day Isabel and Winter engage in a battle of wills. At night their passions are revealed.... But when little girls start disappearing from St. Giles, Winter must avenge them. For that he might have to sacrifice everything-the Home, Isabel...and his life.

Maureen | 183 comments I read this book in a day. It was awesome. Elizabeth makes every story seem like a fairytale. In this story the H Winter Makepiece is like a modern day masked hero Bat Man or Spider-Man. In the story he is the Ghost of St. Giles protector of the children and defenceless citizens of St. Giles. The h Lady Isobel Beckinhall is an older experienced woman of wealth and influence. She rescues the Ghost of St. Giles off the street after he rescues a Pirate from hanging. The love growing between the two and their lovemaking is wonderful. He is a virgin and had taken a vow not to take on a lover or a wife. His calling was to protect the children and citizens as Manager of the Orphanage by day and The Ghost by night. But Isobel made him come alive and he couldn’t help his attraction to her. It is a definite 4 star read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lauren | 1370 comments I still have book 2 and 3 to read. Glad you liked the book Maureen!

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 109 comments This is one of the better books of the Maiden Lane series, which I sadly found sadly inconsistent and occasionally almost unreadable.

Winter Makepeace and Isabel, Lady Beckinhall are a fabulous pairing and I did enjoy their story. The continued saga of the Ghost is becoming a little repetitive but is a clever theme.

Hi Maureen, do you know how to use spoilers? I think there maybe aspects here that are a bit spoilery.

jenny867 | 59 comments Is anyone else frantically reading books 1-3 to get to this one before the end of the month? 🙋‍♀️

I’m partway through book three and Winter has popped up quite a bit in each book so far and the heroine from Thief of Shadows has just been introduced and had a small POV part so I’m glad I’m reading them first.

Paula | 31 comments Because of the challenge, I'm reading this one as this series has been in my ebook for ages. I think at the beginning of the book reference is made to events in the pirate's book 3, as the heroine is the sister of this hero, Winter. Also the women's society is more developed in previous books... However, despite having been very curious about the previous stories, I didn't think I was lacking anything to get into Isabel and Winter's story. Perhaps reading in order would be better to have a holistic view of the relationships between characters, (winter is the brother of the heroine of book 1 and book 3) but so far (30%) I'm not disappointed. Of this series I only read Duke of Sin (10) and I also thought it could be read alone.

Paula | 31 comments great book, both MC were great!

Well I stand by my opinion about being able to be read as stand alone. I've tried several times to start reading this series in order but I can't..I find the beginning of book 1 super boring. Am I missing something?
