Adding ISBN-less books to series

Quick question: for books that do not have an attached ISBN and are too newly added to the system to be searchable based on title/author, is it appropriate to add a temporary/dummy ISBN long enough for the book to be added to a series (and then of course immediately remove the dummy ISBN)? I wouldn't want to cause inadvertent chaos if this is a no-go.
