I like Golden Son a lot. Red Rising was pretty good but I felt like it had just a bit too much of the Young Adult formula going to keep it from being great. Golden Son is entirely different and so much stuff happens it's ridiculous. Great book.Hundred Thousand Kingdoms was really good too. Not your typical fantasy novel at all. Very little action and a lot of character development with excellent world building and some of the best prose I've read in the genre. I'll be reading the sequels soon.
Finished A Darker Shade of Magic. Might be the most fun book I've read all year. So awesome...Everybody needs to read it whether you are a big fantasy fan or not. Now I just have to decide what's next..I can't bring myself to power through Written in Red. It's terrible..not my thing at all.
Gritted my teeth and finished Written in Red. That will teach me to be more selective of the Kindle daily deals. It was cheap and I wanted to try something a bit different but I did not enjoy it at all. The main character is one of the most boring, pathetic leads I've ever read. None of the characters action or motivations made any sense and the book was actually morally disgusting as it glorifies self-harm in a sickening way. I guess it just makes you appreciate the good ones even more! 21 down either way.I started Station Eleven because it looked like something I would really like after hearing about it through this group. I also needed something not quite as dumb as Written in Red so this looked like it fit the bill. Really intriguing beginning. I like it so far.
Finished Station Eleven. Wow...what a mesmerizing, haunting book. So glad I decided to read it. Going to check out the rest of Mandel's work before the year is out.About halfway through Hero of Ages. Not in love with it although that could be because I'm reading it alongside Station Eleven. It's a fun fantasy book but pretty shallow and not even as good as the first two Mistborn books.
22 down! I'm going to make it.
Finished Hero of Ages and Daughter of Smoke & Bone. Both were okay books that ultimately disappointed me for various reasons. Reading Assassin's Apprentice right now and really like it!Kind of glad I joined this group as AA is a book I've been meaning to read for awhile but never had the motivation to start it as I find a lot of older fantasy doesn't stand the test of time very well. This was a random pick and I now regret not reading it years ago. Good stuff.
Finished Assassin's Apprentice. #25 means I am officially a quarter of the way there. Reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell right now. Brilliant book so far.
Since I last updated I finished The Warded Man, Ninth Life of Louis Drax, Far From the Madding Crowd and Jonathan Strange. Good books except for The Warded Man which was kind of garbage (but fun garbage I suppose). I think I need a break after Strange and Norrell though..what a book.Read the first couple chapters of Mirror Empire but I might dive into something else as I'm not really feeling another fantasy right now.
Finished The Grace of Kings and Brandon Sanderson's new short Perfect State. Reading The Boy with the Porcelain Blade right now and really love it.
Finished An Ember in the Ashes. Incredibly fun, entertaining read. Just wish it didn't fall into the same tropes and traps that almost every book in the genre does. Oh well, I still recommend it.
Finished The Unremembered and I'm at 50. Halfway there and 2 months early at that. Probably a good thing since my reading time is going to disappear for a few weeks at least with The Witcher 3 out on PS4. Not often a game can hold my interest over books but this would be the one (and hey, it's based on books at least).
I got lazy and fell behind on updates but I didn't stop reading. Three more down and two almost there since I last checked in.
Right? The end is coming up fast. It's exciting to hear you think you'll hit your goal easily! That's always reassuring going into the final Quarter of the year.
That's super exciting, Chris! Great job this year.Have you read The Witcher books? I haven't played the games (no time) but the story seems really interesting.
Thanks! Really hard to pick just a few favorites out of so many. The Silmarillion and Alice in Wonderland are some of my favorite books of all time but I first read them a long time ago. As for originals...I think Golden Son was incredible. The best of all the Young Adult stuff for sure. A Farewell to Arms was the best of the admittedly few classics I read (more classics is one of my goals for 2016!). That book has stayed with me almost a year later.
City of Stairs, Beyond Redemption, A Darker Shade of Magic, Hyperion, The Boy With the Porcelain Blade and The Three Body Problem were my favorite fantasy/sci-fi novels. Binary Star, Room and Station Eleven were all books that had me in tears. I also read a few more but am too lazy now to put them on the list. Among them The Danish Girl really stood out. It was the last book I read in 2015 and was incredible. Really excited to go see the movie now.
Onto 2016!
