Sean just couldn't get past the fact he was powerless to save Maddie. Jesse loves Sean, but he misses his mom. He doesn't blame Sean for what happened, but it is there all the same.
I felt like both Sean and Jesse felt they let each other down. Sean is a new dad without the foundation of years of experience. Add on his guilt about not protecting Maddie; he fears that Jesse blames Sean for his mother's death. Jesse is angry that Sean let his grandfather mistreat Sean. Jesse didn't know how to deal with his grandfather. Also, I think Jesse is a little jealous of Sean's relationship with the boys at the mission. The real problem for both of them is the fear of talking through their issues together.
They're not talking about the things they should be talking about. Both of them feel guilty. Sean thinks he let Maddie get killed. Jesse is having a hard time dealing with his mother's death. I also agree that he is a little jealous of Sean's relationship with the boys at the mission.
I agree that both are avoiding the main stuff bothering them. Sean feels guilty about not better protecting Maddie and Jesse, though he misses his mother, is seriously angry at her for being part of the cartel. And, he’s mad that Sean is letting her and Carson off the hook. I didn’t get any sense at all that he blamed Sean for Maddie’s death…he wants him to get mad, too.
