Yes 😂 It's a definitve yes from me.

Jen K | 1547 comments I thought you might be okay with it!

@Leslie?

Jen K | 1547 comments Started this today, just chapters 1-3 so far but will at least get through 5 by the end of the day. I'm glad that I'm reading the second one relatively soon after the first as I'm already trying hard to remember everyone.

Was able to read only 4 chapters, which is still great considering I had a 3 hour "nap", and still have some things too do even though it's getting late.

I'm surprised I knew who the people were 😂 I thought I would struggle with it more.
Nothing much to comment, it's still early.
I was oh, interesting about Balam sacrificing the thief for the magic.. and then I was wait.. it's not a full true story, but considering the mythology/history it's inspired by the sacrifices DID happen. And that made the first chapter a little 😳

Jen K | 1547 comments Very impressive!! I read through chapter 5 and I am excited to be back in the world and see what will happen. The whole sibling rivalry thing is rough. Maybe they are even now? The jaguar guy is super creepy.

I did forget how many POVs there would be. Not sure if we will cycle back or if there are more? Maybe that's it?

Jen K | 1547 comments Finished through Chapter 10. Still very much enjoying the set up. I do not like or trust Esa at all. I hope that Okoa gets to the bottom of the family history and intrigue. Is Esa really looking out for the clan or just for herself?

I was not surprised at all by the person's name sitting next to Xiala at the fire. Of course, xe made it out of the chaos on the solstice. I just wonder who's side and what their objective is. So intrigue. I with Xiala in wishing that she and Serepio can just escape to an island and live happily ever after.

Also what did you make of Nara's vision? Was it her brother or Serapio or even Okoa since he has the mask? Doesn't seem like a positive outcome unless she can change it.

Jen K | 1547 comments Through Chapter 15.

I was intrigued about Verity so I started reading that yesterday and even though I wanted to be done 2/3 with the book I finished that one today.. I won't be able to catch up today, but I at least hope to read a few chapters.

Jen K | 1547 comments Hope you enjoyed Verity!!

I'm having the other problem of not wanting to stop because it is my only non-audio book at the moment. Every time I consider starting another book to slow down, I can't follow through. At least work is keeping me in check.

Excited to discuss when you have a chance to read more.

Verity was...interesting. I don't know how to rate it. There were some mind blowing parts and then there were parts where I laughed because I found it absurd.

😂 Hey, you can read more I don't have a problem with it. I'll try to read a big chunk hopefully tomorrow, because I want to read a few books RIGHT NOW 😅 so that I have ppl to discuss it with, and I have no idea how to organize myself. I can't juggle 4 books 😭

Ha, thanks!! I'm on Chapter 18 right now so not too far ahead of the revised schedule. I will just keep checking in every 5 chapters. I should do more of my audio BR but that is a harder format to manage at the moment. I would feel weird wearing headphones at the restaurant.

4 books is a lot!!! I had 3 BRs going a couple of weeks ago and that was hard enough to manage.

I'm so intrigued by Verity. I really wanted to read it for a while and then decided it looked too creepy and not for me. Some mind blowing parts might be worth it?

I have this BR, and the BR for Red Tigress, currently behind on both. And then there are the GRs Atlas Six and Hail Mary that I saw people are reading atm and I want to discuss so I kinda have to find how to read that too.

There is/was a BR going on for Verity and since I made the thread I get notifications when they comment so I read some of the comments and was intrigued. I jumped in yesterday when it was the day before the last on the schedule.
I didn't find it too creepy, it certainly has been written to have that scary atmosphere which was good. I liked one side of the story and was ooh-oh at the end, the other side of the story was the ridicules one and it might have pulled down the story a little for me. It wasn't the most blowing book, but I think it's worth giving it a shot.

Planning on at least reading 5-10 chapters.

5.
Oh, great Xiala tells us how she's grown to love Serapio..how long do you know each other?

9.
Iktan is aliveeee. I wasn't surprised by the name either.. when Xiala started talking to him I was suspicious and then they said Xe... and all was solved.

It is worth trying to catch the discussions!! Project Hail Mary is a fun one to discuss and so unlike the others (I'm assuming), much more literal science than fantasy.

Love that you get sucked in by a good BR discussion! I usually plan too much, trying to find a book that fits multiple challenges in one go, to just throw in a book but I keep meaning to plan less.... Will re-consider Verity. :)

It was a very intense few days!! There were threats and storms and shared hostage quarters and so on. He must be the love of her life.

Of course Iktan managed to save xir hide and now we have Iktan and Nara thinking the other dead and the mess that will make.

Still really enjoying even though it is all still setting up for the real action.

Jen K | 1547 comments Just realized that my super enjoyment of the book may just be based on reading true fantasy again rather than difficult real life books. Like the xe, so fabulous that third genders are just a common accepted thing and the bad stuff like death by a bird is too fantastical to be overly bothersome.

I started NOT planning things and just jumping in on BRs.. but with my luck it's 3-4 good ones happening AT THE SAME time.

"He must be the love of her life" 😂😂

I agree on the third genders thing, I was very fascinated by it in the first book, wasn't expecting it and before that I'm pretty sure I didn't saw it anywhere.

Leslie Dauer-Creek | 324 comments I am a little behind myself, only through chapter 16 atm. Agree with too many good buddy reads (currently also doing The Obelisk Gate), but I read Project Hail Mary a couple months ago - SO good that my husband bought it for me after because I said I could read it again and again (and I will, just not now).
Jumping into this, it did take me a wee bit to remember what had happened before we last left Naranpa, Serapio and the rest. I was surprised to Iktan at least at that point and where xe was. I enjoyed the brief explanation of the culture of the third gender that Iktan gave, as well as the myths behind the culture. I think Roanhorse made Xiala such an outsider that it wasn't out of place hearing these explanations of the mainland culture/stories - almost like we are Xiala finding out about them. I didn't notice it that much in the first book, but definitely prominent in this one.

Jen K | 1547 comments Finished Chapter 25, I'm enjoying all the maneuvering of the alliances but it is going to be killer when the book ends on the cusp of the final showdown. Dang middle book.

I like this world, the characters and Roanhorse's writing. I do have to say that I do get frustrated when I want to keep going with one person's POV and it switches but I do like most of them. Balam was the one I liked the least but it just got more interesting.

Jen K | 1547 comments Finished. Definitely a middle book but I enjoyed the character development especially for Serapio and Nara. Now to wait for the final book in the trilogy.

Finally have some time so I picked up the book again, and I hate when I stop reading something and pick it up after a longer time. First I didn't know where I stopped even though I saw on what chapter, I don't remember what happened and after 2 read chapters I'm not that fired up to read it... Like I said, I hate when I stop reading something and pick it up later because I lose interest.

Wait.. Xiala's mother is head of the Teek or something like that? Was I supposed to know that? Because I don't remember it. IF it was mentioned in book one I probably didn't see the importance in that.

I finished chapter 19, hopefully I'll read the rest today. If nothing else I'll have less to read by the end of the month. Thankfully I got back to enjoying the story so I'm glad for that. Also, would like some friendship between Iktan and Xiala.

Jen K | 1547 comments Glad you were able to get back into it. This would be a hard one to put down as you need to get into the momentum of the character development.

Xiala's mom being a head Teek is as new to the reader as it is to Xiala but I like it. Seemed like a bit of a con as Xiala doesn't seem to think one leader is really a thing for the Teek- reminds me of the US government trying to negotiate with indigenous tribal chiefs not understanding that one can't speak for all.

Yeeeeah, read it that one day and dropped it down again for a few days. I like it when I listen to it, but I also don't want to listen to more than few chapters at a time. I feel like the slump that I have is worse than ever, but that could also be because I didn't really have time to relax so now when I get those moments I'm just doing nothing.

I'm currently on chapter 30 not that far from the end to which I'll get because it's the last day of the reading challenge, not because I'm in a hurry to finish it. I don't know what to comment on. I like that the more main characters Serapio, Nara, and Xiala are on separate journeys so we get to see them in different situations than in the first book, but also we get to see them grow. That being said, I don't think I can comment on anything else. Not reading the book normally aka every day, I feel like things are not happening in the book which annoys me a bit.

Oh, I was surprised about Ochi.. I did not expect him to die so soon. Or maybe it wasn't soon but because of my reading it felt like it happened too fast, and we didn't get more time to spend with him.

Jen K | 1547 comments Sorry for the slump. It is so hard to be forced to do something, even one that you enjoy, when you have so little time.

I enjoyed the separate journeys too. There really isn't much action so not great for rushing to get to the main action. Ochi was surprising but also maybe not. I think that Nara needed to be forced to be on her own to discover her own power the same as Serapio and she couldn't do it with her brother controlling so much.
