Rosina | 330 comments I started reading and was thinking that this story wasnt really to my liking but the more I read the more I started to want to read more. Interesting cast of characters Xan, Fyrian, Glerk, Antwain, Luna & Ethyne. I am intrigued by Glerk and what kind of monster he is and if he has any powers/magic. Xan has much knowledge to pass to Luna before she expires. I am glad that there is going to be a story thread with Antwain & Ethyne. Want to learn more about Ethyne since she was just introduced in the last chapter. I keep wishing there was an illustrated copy or graphic novel.

Melanie | 167 comments I think I struggle with fantasy in general. The fact that my niece really enjoyed this book and that it's a Newberry Award winner gave me hope to try it. Plus, I think the cover art is really beautiful. But I hear you. It's not really a genre that I immediately connect with, but I'm hopeful. And your idea to make it a graphic novel -- GENIUS!

So a couple of things I can't stop thinking about so far:

1. The story of the annual sacrifice of a baby to the forest witch even though the elders know there is no witch -- just made me so angry. I was prepared to try and have mercy thinking that I couldn't really judge another culture's long-held beliefs, but then when they revealed that the elders knew all along there was no witch -- I'm still stewing on that. I really want some kind of justice for Gherland.

2. What is the deal with Luna's mother? Was Luna already magical before Xan found her? I mean she and her mother share the crescent moon birthmark, and that whole paper bird situation -- is that Luna's power manifesting to punish those who stole her from her birthmother? Or is it the mom's own power that she uses to inflict pain on Antwain for the role he played as a silent witness to the theft of her child?

3. I'm also kind of hoping that all the stolen children are somehow reunited with their parents by the end of this book. I cannot imagine that loss.

#2 i was wondering the exact same. Was Luna already magical? I hadn't thought about getting back at Antwan for being a silent witness but would make sense.

Rosina | 330 comments My reading today was in spurts and I think at some point i missed some connections. I am enjoying the story. I am hoping that Antwain is successful in his quest to save his baby from the Witch. Now Luna and her mother I am trying to figure them out. Are they witches, definitely magical creatures if not. I am sad that Xan is getting weaker. Was Zosimos that wizard that went in the volcano? Will the madwoman find Xan? surprising that Luna was taken if she was so magically - her mothers powers must have been known at that time.
Looking forward to see how this will wrap up.

Melanie | 167 comments I am right there with you. I'm afraid this is not going to be the book that turns me on to fantasy. I'm hoping that things start to resolve as we only have one day of reading left -- but there are a lot of loose ends. The witch in the prison that eats people's grief -- what is the deal between her and Gherland? I mean it seems he has been sacrificing babies all this time so she can feast on grief -- is that why he lives such a long time? Is that why he is even willing to betray his nephew whom he seems to really like, even though he treated Antwain horribly. We shall see.

Rosina | 330 comments Well I finished the read. I am giving it a 3 star rating. I was hoping that I would end up liking this more but it didnt capture me as I had hoped. Guess I just wast into this story or fantasy at this time. I have another BR for a fantasy I hope I can do it. Looking forward to our other read this weekend.

Melanie | 167 comments I am still not a fantasy reader. I think my mind cannot relax and allow fantasy to wash over me. I'm too busy thinking of it all as allegory -- and then I get frustrated by some of the implications that are expressed all wound up in a fairy tale. UGGH! There were a few things that I liked.

1. I liked Luna. And at the end when Luna is going to see Xan and attend to her as she is dying she says to her mother, "Love is not divided. It's multiplied." I loved that line. So that was a little bright spot.

2. I like when they are asking Gherland to ask for forgiveness and he is told that he's been forgiven but asking for forgiveness is his way forward. When he refuses to apologize, he is just left behind and forgotten. I think that was some serious wisdom -- but I didn't need to read 400 pages for that.

I think 3 stars is pretty generous. I'm probably at 2.5 but I'll round up. Thanks for suffering through this with me. I'm really hoping All the Little Hopes is much better. It certainly can't be worse. (She says crossing her fingers).

Rosina | 330 comments I ❤️ that line as well and agree 400 pages long to get there...oh well....maybe fantasy is just not our jam...
